Nine soldiers and civilian employees of USAFIK were expelled from South Korea in early 1946 because of their involvement with communist activities. The G-2 Intelligence and Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) were afraid that the Information & Education Section (I & E Section) of G-3 became the secret base of communist operation. The core figure was James Klonsky who was famous for his communist activities before army conscription and worked as editor of the Korean Graphic magazine published by I & E Section. He contacted with Alice Hyun who worked for the Civil Communication Intelligence Group Korea (CCIG-K), G-2, XXIV Corps as War Department civilian. Alice Hyun was Assistant Chief of District Station I of CCIG-K. She hired many North Koreans and communists as interpreters to interfere the function of CCIG-K. CIC accused that Alice Hyun played an important role for the establishment of connection between the South Korean Communist Party (SKCP) and the United States Branch of National Revolutionary Party (NRP). CIC also determined that the Independence newspaper which was published by the Korean radicals in LA area was sneaked into South Korea and the secret information of USAFIK was leaked out through the Alice Hyun channel. Norman Frisch, the editor of the Corps Courier, I & E Section official newspaper, James West, the cartoonist of the Daily Worker, the famous left-wing newspaper who stayed two years in Russia, and David L. Olmstead, communist who graduated from Cornell University were also charged with communist activities involvement. They were all I & E Section members. And Peter Hyun, brother of Alice Hyun and official interpreter of USAFIK, Harold Zepelin, clerk of Bando Hotel, Edwin B. Brown, Field Artilleryman, and Carl C. Sunoo, Chief of Secretariat of Military Government of North Kyongsang Province were also under suspicion of connection with communist activities. Peter Hyun openly met with Park Hon Young, the leader of SKCP, and Lyuh Woon Hyung, famous left-wing leader. Carl C. Sunoo distributed the Independence newspaper within the offices of the Military Government of North Kyongsang Province. Park Hon Young met with Klonsky, Zepelin, Frisch, and Alice and wrote recommendation letters to U.S. Communist Party (USCP) for them. USAFIK appraised that the communist group in USAFIK which was leaded by Klonsky attempted to establish the communication ring and communist cell. Also they contacted with SKCP and left-wing organizations. They brought some communist publications from U.S. for the need of SKCP and collected informations on South Korean situations for publication in U.S. They tried to established international relation with SKCP and USCP. But there were little possibility that they tried to sabotage or treason to USAFIK.
