국문 초록

[연구목적] 그 동안 많은 선행연구들은 기업의 사회적 성과가 기업가치에 어떻게 영향을 주는 지에 대해서 초점을 맞춰왔다. 그러나 기업은 기업수명주기에 따른 전략의 선택 , 가용자원 그리고 경영자 능력의 차이로 인해 기업의 사회적 성과가 상이하게 평가된다는 것을 간과해 왔다. 본 연구의 목적은 기업의 사회적 책임성과와 경영자보상 간의 관련성을 분석한 후, 이러한 관련성이 기업의 수명주기 단계에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지를 분석하는 것이다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 기업의 사회적 성과가 경영자보상에 미치는 영향을 기업수명주기별로 표본을 세분화하여 회귀분석 하였다. [연구결과] 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기업의 사회적 책임성과와 경영자보상 간에는 유의한 양(+)의 관련성이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 경영자보상을 결정하는 과정에서 기업의 사회적 책임성과도 반영된다는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 기업의 사회적 책임성과와 경영자보상 간 양(+)의 관련성의 유의성은 기업수명주기 단계 중에서 성장기, 성숙기 그리고 조정기 순으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 도입기의 사회적 책임성과는 경영자보상으로 이어지기가 어렵지만 성장기와 성숙기를 거치면서 기업의 사회적 책임성과가 기업의 성장전략에 중요한 변수로 작용하여 경영자보상에 반영되는 가중치도 증가하는 것이다. 조정기에 접어든 기업에서는 기업의 사회적 책임활동보다 새로운 성장기회의 발견노력이 기업의 생존에 더 중요하게 다가오므로 경영자보상에 반영되는 사회적 책임성과의 가중치는 줄어드는 것이다. 마지막으로 기업의 사회적 책임성과와 경영자 중요성 간의 양(+)의 관련성은 성숙기에서만 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 성숙기에서만이 기업의 사회적 책임성과가 높을수록 실질적인 경영자 역할의 중요성이 증가하는 것을 의미한다. [연구의 시사점] 본 연구는 경영자보상과정에서 기업이 경영자의 사회적 책임활동을 어떻게 반영해야 할지에 대한 지침을 제공하였고, 이해관계자들의 의사결정에 도움을 주는 새로운 증거를 제공하였다.

영문 초록

[Purpose] Many previous studies have focused on only how corporate social performance affects firm value. However, they have overlooked that corporate social performance is evaluated differently across firm life cycle stages which are different in strategy choices, available resources, and managerial capabilities. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between corporate social responsibility performance and manager compensation, and then analyze how this relationship varies with firm life cycle stages. [Methodology] To determine the effect of corporate social performance on manager compensation, this study conducted regression analyses by subdividing the sample across firm life cycle. [Findings] The results of this study are as follows. First, there is a significantly positive relationship between corporate social performance and manager compensation. This result shows that corporate social performance is reflected in the process of determining manager compensation. Second, the significance of the positive relationship between corporate social performance and manager compensation appears in the order of growth, mature, and shake-out stages. The results show that corporate social performance at the introduction is difficult to be linked to managerial compensation. As a result of the growth and mature stages, corporate social performance becomes an important factor for corporate growth strategy, and the weight on managerial compensation also increases. In the companies that enter into the shake-out stages, the effort to discover new growth opportunities might become more important to their survival than corporate social responsibility activities. Thus, the weight of corporate social performance on managerial compensation would be rapidly reduced. Finally, the positive relationship between corporate social performance and manager importance appeared only at the mature stages. This result suggests that as corporate social performance is higher at the mature stages, the role of the manager is more important. [Implications] This study provided guidance on how firms should reflect managers’ social responsibility activities in the manager compensation process, and provided new evidence to help stakeholders make decisions.
