국문 초록

[연구목적] 본 연구는 본격적인 다문화 시대를 맞이하고 있는 현 시점에서 학술논문 분석을 통해 미국에서의 이민자 영어 교육 연구영역의 흐름과 변화가 어떤 모습을 보이는지를 알아보는 데에 목적을 두었다. [연구방법] 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 K-12 영어학습자를 대상으로 1968년 이후부터 2019년 현재까지의 이민자 영어교육의 흐름을 네트워크 매핑 분석을 활용하여 분석하였다. [연구결과] 주요 연구결과를 살펴보면 첫째, 1기(1968~2000)에서는 ‘Linguistic Diversity, ‘Linguistic Policy’ 등이, 2기(2001-2007)에서는 Achievement, Assessment 등이, 3기(2008-2019)에서는 ‘Teacher Education’, ‘Teaching Strategy’, 주제가 활발하게 나타났다. 둘째, 시기별 주요 연구영역을 살펴보면, Bilingual Education은 모든 기간에 지속적으로 강조되었으며, 1기에는 상대적으로 교육의 성취나 결과보다는 교육기회나 차별금지 등의 교육원칙에 큰 관심을 가지고 연구되었으며, 2기에는 동등한 기회를 제공하는 데에서 한발 더 나아가 학생들의 영어 실력이 향상될 수 있도록 하는 데에 관심을 가지고 연구가 진행되었다. 또한, 3기에는 이중 언어 교육을 위한 문화적, 언어적 다양성을 고려하는 언어 교육 및 교수 전략에 대한 관심이 높아졌음을 알 수 있다. [결론] 미국의 이민자 영어교육 연구의 흐름은 다문화적 정체성을 인정하고, 이중 언어 교육을 통해 교육 형평성을 이루기 위한 끊임없는 투쟁의 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 우리나라는 상대적으로 다문화 언어 교육에 대한 중요성과 필요에 비해 그 연구의 역사는 짧다고 볼 수 있다. 미국의 사례를 통해 발견되는 시사점을 반영하여 시행착오를 줄이려는 부단한 연구가 필요하다.

영문 초록

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to find out the trends in the field of English language education for K-12th grade immigrant children in the United. This article carries forward what has happened to English language education (ELE) through the literature reviews from 1968 to 2019, which may roughly translate perspectives of equitable and excellent [English] language education in the United States of America. [Methods] To achieve this purpose, the peer-reviewed articles on the topics of English language education for the K-12 immigrant children or English were analyzed using semantic network analysis (SNA) with a guided research question; “What were the emerged trends in K-12 ELE in the US during each of the three phases? This study adopts SNA as a research method to calculate the appearance frequency of a word and to analyze the connection strength between words. The co-word, co-citation, and author(s) are the three elements used when using semantic mapping for the data analysis. By using the relationship between the frequency of occurrence, researchers can extract the data for the interpretation and the areas for the additional analysis. In this study, the keywords extracted from the research journal articles on immigrants’ English language education were analyzed using co-word mapping analysis. [Results] First, the key codes extracted from each of the three phases were: 1) ‘Linguistic Diversity’ and ‘Linguistic Policy’ in the first phase (1968~2000), 2) ‘Achievement’ and ‘Assessment’ in the second phase (2001~2007), and 3) ‘Teacher Education’ and ’Teaching Strategy’ in the third phase (2008~2019). Second, the different research trends were shown for each phase, but bilingual education was continuously emphasized in all of the three phases. The research was conducted with the interest in how the educators ought to embrace the language education as a multidimensional ‘topic of choice’ in fighting for equity for diverse language learners as well as to provide the opportunity to these underserved language learners to improve their [English] language proficiency. [Conclusion] The research trends on English education for immigrants in the United States were shown to be a process of the endless struggles to recognize multicultural identities and achieve educational equity through bilingual education. Compared to the importance and necessity of multi-cultural language education in Korea, the related studies are relatively rare. Related research in Korea can replicate on the topic of English language education by adopting the ethnographic/historical data from research articles and/or the semantic map as a tool of analyzing the data.
