국문 초록

2008년 컬럼비아대학교의 신입생 글쓰기 교과목에서는 학술 담론이 생성되는 전형적 과정을 반영하여, 렌즈에세이(Lens Essay, 25%), 대화적 에세이(Conversational Essay, 25%), 협력적 탐구 에세이(Collaborative Essay, 35%), 자기 성찰적 에세이(Retrospective Essay, 15%) 등 네 편의 긴 글을 쓰게 하였다. 학술 담론이 생성되는 단계적 과정을 반영한, 이 렌즈에세이, 대화적 에세이, 협력적 탐구 보고서 쓰기 과제는 각각 이론화 전략과 비판적 문식성을 함양하고 학술 담론 생성 절차를 익히도록 구성되었다. 이에 본고에서는 컬럼비아대학교의 신입생 글쓰기 교수법과 그 적용 사례를 소개함으로써 국내 대학 작문 교과의 변별적 목표와 교수법을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 컬럼비아대학교의 이 목적 지향적 교수법은 대학 신입생이 학문 담화 공동체의 일원으로서 학술 담론을 생성할 수 있도록 전략과 절차를 가르친다는 점에서, 국내 대학 작문 교과의 교수 학습 목표를 정초하고 적절한 교수법을 개발하는 데 참조할 바가 많다.

영문 초록

This study has introduced the curriculum of academic writing course consisted with 4 consecutive tasks in Columbia university in order to set up the purpose and a model of curriculum of academic writing course with undergraduate students in Korea. Undergraduate students write 4 main essays in those writing progressions including a lens essay, a conversational essay, a collaborative essay, and a retrospective essay at the unique writing curriculum. In the first lens essay progression, a student should find a lens from an article mostly written by the professors of Columbia University. Then he or she has to analyze the other object such as a picture or another written text through the lens from the origin text. However Korean student had to start from the project finding a proper lens to adapt his or her own essay since we had little lens essay samples. Through this project, students learned the strategy to build up the logical frame of certain academic written discourse. A conversational essay task has the same problem. We had no proper sample for a conversational essay and this task is somewhat difficult for a freshman. Therefore the teacher put the task into the fictional interest context inviting two or more famous people representing the opposite special opinion. And she made the task easier by permitting to complete together. Through this project, students accustomed to the critical literacy comparing the several counterarguments. And finally through a collaborative essay procession, students learned the procedural knowledge to produce a academic written discourse. The 4 consecutive tasks from the curriculum of academic writing course with undergraduate students in Columbia university are useful to set up the purpose and a model of academic writing course in Korea.
