혜암의 통전적 교회사학 되새김

국문 초록

이 글은 한신대학교 명예교수 혜암 이장식 박사의 학술 작품에서 발견되는 통전적 특징의 의미와 가치를 되새겨 보려는 시도다. 혜암이 1970-80년대에, 50-60세 학자로서 절정기에서 쓴 15편의 논문들에 기반하여 그의 교회사학이 지닌 통전적-통섭적 신학 특징을 되새김하였다. ‘통전적’(integration)이라는 단어 안에는 통합, 합병, 집대성, 완성, 융화, 조화 등의 복합적 의미가 있다. 혜암의 신학적 사고의 통전적 특징은 피상적이고 얕은 ‘중도 노선’으로 오해되어서는 안 된다. 오히려 혜암의 통전적 사고는 인간의 인지적, 미학적, 사회적, 정치적 관심이 통합된 진정한 기독교 신앙의 표현이다. 본 논문은 혜암 교회사학의 특징을 잘 드러내는 다음 같은 몇 가지 주제를 가려 뽑아 그의 교회사학이 지닌 통전적-통섭적 신학특징을 되새김하였다. (i) 혜암의 신앙과 신학 체질형성에서 모친과 만우 송창근 목사의 영향, (ii) 교회의 직제, 예전, 교리, 신학 등의 역사 문화적 상대성, (iii) 한국교회 체질형성의 뿌리와 그 장단점, (iv) 평신도 신학과 아시아교회의 선교적 과제, (v) 한국교회 예배에서 말씀설교와 성례전 예식의 통전, (vi) 토착화신학과 교회선교의 당면과제. 혜암의 논문들을 위 주제들로 되새김화면서 필자가 새삼스럽게 재발견한 점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 혜암이 100세에 이르기까지 연찬하고 연구한 교회사학의 바탕엔 건전한 교회가 되도록 한국교회를 섬기려는 초지일관의 ‘교회사랑 신학’이라는 점이다. 둘째, 혜암의 교회사학의 특징은 통전적 이해를 추구하면서, 보수신학이나 진보신학 어느 한쪽에로 치우친 극단적 입장을 경계한다. 셋째, 혜암의 폭넓고 깊이 있는 교회사학은 그가 일찍부터 개척적으로 연구한 아시아교회와 그 선교 발전사에 관한 귀중한 진실을 알려주는 학문적 공헌을 하였다.

영문 초록

This essay is an attempt to ruminate the integrative characteristic to be found in the scholarly works of Dr. Hye-am C.S. Lee, an Emeritus Professor of Hanshin University. The term ‘integration’ represents diverse concepts like as coherence, conformation, unification, unity, harmony, merge. and so on. However, this paper is not supposed to give embracing answers to manyfold problems raised in the subject matter in terms of ‘integrative characteristic’ in theological thinking, but to confront the reader with Hye-am s point of theological view which is decisive for the ministrial formation in Korean Church of Today. The integrative feature of Hye-am s theological thinking should not be misunderstood as superficial, shallow-minded ‘middle way’. Rather, Hye-am s integrative thinking is an expression of the authentic christian faith, in which human being’s cognitive, aesthetic, social, political concerns are merged. Hye-am tries to overcome both of the inclinations toward the left-wing and right-wing deviationism. i.e. radical liberalism and radical conservatism. For our thematic development, we will concentrate our attention upon six theological issues selected from Hye-am s articles written during 1970 s-1980 s: (i) the influence of Hye-am s mother and Rev. Dr. Song regarding with Hye-am s spirituality formation (ii) the historico-cultural relativity and limitation of the church organization, doctrine, and theology (iii) the foundation of Korean church (iv) Lay-theology and mission of Asian Church (v) integration of preaching and sacraments in Korean Church (vi) On indigenous theology of Korean church.
