국문 초록

필자는 혜암 이장식 박사가 80세가 되는 해에 출판한 자서전 『창파에 배 띄우고』에 나타난 그의 복음주의 신앙을 살펴보고자 한다. 혜암은 한국의 대표적인 진보적 신학의 요람이라 할 수 있는 한국신학대학의 1회 졸업생이면서 졸업과 동시에 강사로 시작하여 30년 가까이 신학 교수로 후학을 가르쳤다. 그는 학문적으로 진보 신학을 받아들였다고 스스로 밝히기도 했으나, 그의 일생의 삶과 사역은 분명히 복음주의적인 신앙의 깊은 뿌리가 자라 열매 맺힌 것으로 나타난다. 혜암의 자서전에서 네 가지 방면에서 그의 복음주의 신앙을 찾아볼 수 있다: 1. 혜암은 파란만장한 삶 속에서 하나님 중심적이고 성경 중심적인 삶을 살았고 그것을 간증한다. 2. 혜암의 평생 경건은 어머니의 기도와 감화 그리고 어린 시절에 배운 신앙의 열매였다. 3. 혜암의 선교 마인드는 어렸을 때 선교사의 전기를 읽고 받은 감동으로 형성되었다. 4. 혜암의 에큐메니칼 정신은 송창근, 김재준, 한경직 같은 포용력 있는 멘토들의 감화에서 발전되었다. 신학교 교수는 학문과 신학만이 아니라 혜암처럼 복음주의적 신앙의 모범을 보여주어 인격적인 감화를 줄 수 있어야 할 것이다. 그러나 그의 자서전 중 복음주의 신앙에 있어서 요긴한 다른 몇 가지의 요소들이 추가적으로 언급되었더라면 좋았을 것이라는 아쉬움을 느낀다. 곧 거듭남과 성령 체험, 그리스도의 십자가 죽음과 부활에의 연합에 대한 실존적 깨달음과 일상적 삶 속에서의 실천. ‘하나님의 주권’에 대한 신앙을 강하게 드러내고 있는 내용들이 중심이기 때문에 그런 것 같다고 이해된다.

영문 초록

This article is an attempt to examine his evangelical faith shown through the autobiography of Hye-am (pen name of Dr. Chang Sik Lee), published in the year of his age of 80 years. Hye-am was a first graduate of Korea Theological College (today Hanshin University), the cradle of Korea s progressive theology. He started as a lecturer at the same time as he graduated, and taught later as a seminary professor for nearly 30 years. Although he has professed his acceptance of progressive theology academically, his life and ministry clearly appear to have grown and bear fruit from the deep root of evangelical faith. In his autobiography, his evangelical faith can be found in four ways: 1. Hye-am lived a God-centered and Bible-centered life in a turbulent life and bears the testimony of it. 2. Hye-am s lifelong piety was the fruit of her mother s prayer, influence, and faith, which he had learned in his childhood. 3. Hye-am s mission-mindedness has been shaped by the impression he received after reading the biography of Henry Martyn when he was young. 4. Hye-am s ecumenical spirit has been developed from the influence of the pious mentors with leadership of tolerance and pastorship such as Chang-geun Song, Jae Joon Kim, and Kyung Jick Han. The seminary professor should be capable to give a personal influence by showing an example of evangelical faith like Hye-am, as well as academic knowledge and theology. However, it is regrettable that it would have been nice if some another important elements of the evangelical faith had been additionally mentioned in his autobiography, that is, rebirth, experience of the Holy Spirit, and existential realization of the union with Christ at His death on the cross and resurrection and its practice in everyday life.
