국문 초록

미국은 지난 반세기 동안 슈퍼파워로서 전세계에 정치, 경제, 문화, 군사적 영향력을 미치고 있다. 특히, 우리나라는 미국에 대해 한국전 당시 가장 많은 병력을 파병하여 자유민주주의를 수호하게 도와준 고마운 우방이라는 부채의식으로 인해 세계 15위권 내에 드는 경제 강국으로 성장한 지금도 선진국, 초강대국으로서 미국은 여전히 선망의 대상이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 다시 말해, 정권의 특징에 따라 어느 정도의 온도차는 있었으나 우리나라는 거의 항구적인 친미성향의 국가라 할 수 있다. 두 나라는 지난 반세기동안 우방을 뛰어넘어 혈맹이라는 이름아래 서로 깊은 유대를 맺어 왔다. 우리나라는 언제부터인가 친미냐 반미냐 심지어는 ‘탈미’이냐가 선거의 주요 이슈가 될 만큼 정치, 경제, 사회적으로 심지어는 우리의 의식구조에 이르기까지 거의 모든 분야에 걸쳐 미국의 지대한 영향을 받고 있다. 이에 따라 우리가 친숙하게 여기고 있는 미국의 문화코드에 우리사회의 이념적 편향과 오해가 투영되는 면이 없지 않았으며, 우리 스스로 감추어진 진실을 통해 미국의 문화코드를 인식하는 경우가 많았다. 그러나 21세기 정치적 지형의 변화에 발 빠르게 대응하기 위해서도 미국을 바라보는 우리의 오도된 관념은 다각적인 측면에서 재고되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

America as a super state has had a great influence on the global politics, economy, culture and military landscape for the past decades. Particularly, Koreans are prone to having feelings that they owe a debt to America for fighting for the freedom of this nation during the war by dispatching the largest troops. In addition, although having become the 15th largest GDP and 7th largest exporter in the world, America has been always admired as the most ‘developed’ superpower among the western countries. In other words, according to the characteristics of the regime, the difference existed to a certain degree, yet, it is not overstated that Korea has been a long-standing pro-American nation. This kind of immobile ideology, on the contrary, has settled a social myth about America. This study describes our prejudice and misunderstanding about America and aims to grasp the meaning of the American Culture Code hidden in the truth created by Koreans. As a multi-ethnic, multi-racial country, America faces many challenges politically or economically. Its social integration remains unsolved. Accordingly, this study will give us a chance to find out true colors of America.
