조이스와 도시 생태학적 상상력

국문 초록

본 논문은 제임스 조이스(James Joyce)의 『더블린 사람들』(Dubliners)의 단편들에서 「뜻밖의 만남」(“An Encounter”)과 「작은 구름」(“A Little Cloud”)을 중심으로 도시 생태비평적 관점에서 논의하고자 한다. 조이스는 『더블린 사람들』에서 더블린을 배경으로 초라하고 평범하게 살아가는 소시민들의 마비된 일상의 삶을 “꼼꼼하고 인색한” 문체로 그리고 있다. 그러나 작품의 중심 주제인 “마비”에 생기를 더해주는 것은 단편소설마다 변화되어 나타나는 계절의 변화, 그리고 시간대에 따라 미묘하고 섬세하게 묘사되고 있는 날씨와 더블린 거리 풍경이다. 조이스 작품에 대한 21세기의 비평적 접근에 대해, 래섬(Sean Latham)은 조이스 학자들이 생태비평이라는 활기찬 분야에 대해 놀라울 정도로 관심이 제한되어 있다고 지적한다. 비록 조이스 작품에 대한 생태 비평적 연구가 활발히 이루어져 온 것은 아니지만, 최근 들어 점점 더 조이스 학자들뿐만 아니라 생태비평가들에게 주목을 받기 시작하고 있다. 본 논문은 조이스의 「뜻밖의 만남」과 「작은 구름」을 중심으로 두 작품에 공통으로 나타나는 날씨의 변화, 도시 목가, 그리고 빈곤한 더블린 도시풍경에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 조이스의 작품 속에 나타나는 도시 자연에 대한 인식을 논의의 출발점으로 삼고자 한다. 다음으로 자연에 대한 조이스의 자연과 도시환경에 관한 관심과 인식을 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고「뜻밖의 만남」의 소년 화자의 도시 목가적 생태인식과 「작은 구름」에 나타나는 아일랜드 문예부흥운동이 목표로 하는 시골 중심의 이데올로기 비판과 함께 “친애하는 더러운 더블린”에 대한 조이스의 도시 풍경 그리기 속에 나타나는 도시민의 마비, 소외, 탈출 욕구와 실패를 도시생태의식을 통해 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

In Dubliners, James Joyce portrays the paralyzed daily lives of shabby, ordinary citizens with Dublin as background. However, the elements that add vigor to the main theme of the work, ‘paralysis’, are the changes of weather appearing in each story and the delicate descriptions of weather and scenes of Dublin streets that are subtly drawn with the passage of time. Regarding 21st century literary approach on Joyce’s works, Sean Latham notes that interest of Joycean Scholars in the vibrant field of ecocriticism was limited to a surprising degree. Ecocritical approach towards Joyce and his works initially received little attention from literary critics but since then the approach is becoming more acknowledged within the field. This paper explores Joyce’s Dubliners in an urban ecocritical approach with emphasis on the short stories “An Encounter” and “A Little Cloud”. The changes of weather, urban pastoral, and the impoverished urban environment of Dublin appear in both stories. It is possible to observe Joyce’s consciousness regarding urban nature in his works. The paper explores critical texts in which Joyce’s direct perceptions regarding nature can be found and then examines how such interest and consciousness of nature and urban environment is recreated in Dubliners. In “An Encounter”, the urban pastoral and ecological consciousness of the boy narrator and the impoverished daily lives of Dublin citizens can be observed. By analyzing “A Little Cloud”, the paper explores, in addition to the criticism of rural focused ideology that the Irish Literary Revival aimed for, how paralysis, alienation, desire to escape, and failure appears in Joyce’s urban painting of “dear dirty Dublin” from an urban ecocritical perspective.
