조선후기 전주부 읍치경관의 일반성과 고유성

국문 초록

우리 국토에 300여 개소나 분포했던 조선시대의 읍치는 각 고을의 정치·행정적 중심지로서 우리나라 전통도시를 대변한다. 전주읍치는 백제가 설치한 완산주라는 고을에 기원을 두고 있으며, 후백제시대에는 한 국가의 도읍지로, 고려시대에는 다시 읍치로 있었다. 조선시대의 전주부 읍치에서는 국성(國姓)인 전주이씨의 본관(本貫)임을 상징하는 다양한 경관과 장소를 매개로 읍치와 도읍의 특징을 함께 갖춘 독특한 읍치경관이 창출되었다. 19세기 전반의 전주부 읍치경관은 국지적 스케일에서는 읍치로서, 지역 스케일에서는 전라도 감영지로서, 그리고 국가 스케일에서는 국성(國姓), 곧 조성왕실의 발상지라는 인식에 바탕을 둔 ‘또 하나의 도읍’으로서 각 스케일에 연관된 다양한 경관과 장소들이 한 데 어우러져 고유한 읍치경관을 형성하였다. 조선시대 전주부의 읍치경관은 오늘의 관점에서 현대도시 전주의 역사도시경관이다. 옛 전주부의 읍치경관을 오늘날 재현함에 있어서는 복원 대상 시기를 특정할 필요가 있다. 그리고 물리적, 형태적 재건축 사업에 머물지 않도록 읍치 안팎의 다양한 경관과 장소들이 개개 수준 혹은 집합적 차원에서 어떤 시·공간적 맥락과 내러티브에 연루되어 있는지 놓치지 말아야 한다. 조선의 읍치경관은 각 고을 규모에서 전개된 인간-자연 관계와 풍부한 담론 세계를 가시적 경관의 이면에 간직한 심오한 지리적 표상이다.

영문 초록

Upchi (county seats, 邑治) of the Joseon Dynasty, which was distributed in more than 300 places on our territory, represent the traditional cities of Korea as political and administrative centers of each village. Upchi of Jeonju has its origins in the county of Wansanju, established by the Baekje Dynasty. Upchi of Jeonju was Doup(the national capital, 都邑) during the Post-Baekje Dynasty, and then became a county again during the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Joseon Dynasty, Jeonju Eupchi created a unique townscape as a general Eupchi and another Doup with various landscapes and places symbolizing the King’s surname and hometown of the King at the same time. In the first half of the 19th century, townscape of Jeonju Upchi was a town on the local scale, Jeolla-do province on the regional, and ‘another Doup’ based on the perception that it was the birthplace of the Joseon Royal Family on the national scale. From today’s point of view, townscape of Jeonju Upchi of Joseon Dynasty is a historical urban landscape of modern city Jeonju. In representing the old townscape of Jeonju Upchi today, it is necessary to specify the target period of reconstruction. In order to stay within the physical and formal rebuilding projects, we must not miss out on what temporal and spatial contexts and narratives the various landscapes and places inside and outside the town are involved at individual or collective levels. The townscape of Upchi of the Joseon Dynasty is a profound geographical symbol that preserves the world of human-nature relations and abundant discourse behind the visible side.
