충청·전북지역 적색마연토기의 제작기술적 특징과 성격

국문 초록

본고의 목적은 충청·전북지역 적색마연토기의 시기별·유구별 특징을 검토하는 데 있다. 특히 적색마연토기에서 관찰할 수 있는 가장 중요한 기술적 속성인 슬립과 마연 기법의 기능적 측면을 주목하였다. 제작공정에 대한 이해를 위해 자연과학적 분석과 민족지고고학 연구를 살펴보고 이와 병행하여 적색마연토기 제작실험을 실시하였다. 다음으로 슬립과 마연 기법의 기능적 측면과의 관계를 파악하기 위해 기종별 전개 및 출토맥락을 검토하였다. 그 결과 충청·전북지역의 적색마연토기는 영남지역과 달리 생활유적에서의 출토사례가 절대적이며, 형태상 실용성이 높은 기종이 다수라는 점이 확인되었다. 이와 함께 충남대학교 박물관 소장 적색마연토기를 대상으로 관찰과 분석을 실시한 결과 시기와 유구에 따라 제작기술적 특징과 성격을 달리한다는 점도 확인할 수 있었다. 적색마연토기의 슬립과 마연 기법에 대한 연구에서는 대부분 부장 및 의례용으로서 장식성에 주목하여왔으나 실용적인 측면에 대한 검토도 이루어져야 함을 강조하였다. 이에 적색마연토기에 대한 실제적인 분석은 출토맥락과 슬립 및 마연의 정도와 기능 사이의 상관관계를 확인하는 것에 중점을 두었다. 충청·전북지역 출토 적색마연토기에서는 시간의 흐름에 따라 수량의 증가, 유구의 다양화, 특정 기종의 소멸과 등장 등 몇몇 특징적 현상이 확인된다. 또 하나 흥미로운 변화는 청동기시대 중기에 들어서면서 슬립과 마연 기법이 개선된다는 점이다. 특히 패총 출토품의 경우 높은 수준의 슬립 치밀도가 관찰되는바 유구 성격에 따른 제작기술의 차별화를 생각해볼 수 있다. 결국 슬립과 마연 기법의 개선은 적색마연토기의 실용성 증가에 따른 기능의 강화와 용도의 다양화에 기인하는 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of red burnished pottery discovered throughout the Chungcheong and Jeonbuk provinces both temporally and with respect to its associated features. In particular, we focus on the functional aspects of the application of slip and burnishing techniques, the most important technical attributes of red burnished pottery. In order to better understand production processes, we first examine the results of scientific analyses and ethnographic studies related to these techniques and conduct production experiments. Next, we examine the temporal patterns and features associated with various forms of red burnished pottery. In so doing, we confirm that the vast majority of red burnished pottery was excavated from dwelling sites and have highly practical forms. We also conducted an analysis and observation of red burnished pottery housed in the Chungnam National University Museum, which confirms that the technical characteristics of red burnished pottery vary depending on period of production and related features. Most studies that address the application of slip and burnishing techniques have focused on decorative aspects, which have been assumed to be related to funerary or ceremonial contexts. However, we suggest that functional aspects also deserve attention. This study focuses on the relationship between archaeological contexts, the quality of slip and burnishing and functional uses. In the Chungcheong and Jeonbuk provinces, some important changes over time are identified, such as an increase in the amount of red burnished pottery, the appearance and decline of particular forms, and diversification of associated features. In addition, the quality of slip and burnishing improved in the Middle Bronze Age. In the case of red burnished pottery excavated from shell middens, a high degree of slip density is identified. As a result, improvement of slip and burnishing techniques can be attributed to improvement of function for practical purposes and the diversification of functional uses.
