남원 윤씨의 유서와 <명도자탄사> 연구

국문 초록

본고는 조선후기의 열녀 남원 윤씨(南原尹氏, 1768~1801)의 유서와 가사 <명도자탄사>를 대상으로 그에 반영된 열녀의 내면을 고찰하고, 이를 통해 작품의 의의를 재고하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 유서와 가사의 양상 및 특징을 종합적으로 분석하고 남원 윤씨에게 두 텍스트의 창작이 어떠한 의미를 지닌 행위였는지 탐문해보고자 하였다. 남원 윤씨의 유서 9편에는 열과 효의 모순으로 인한 내적 갈등, 단정한 죽음에의 강박과 자기 죽음의 의미를 숙고한 흔적, 사후의 일을 구체적으로 대비하는 태도가 반복적으로 확인된다. 반면, 다른 열녀의 유서들에 비해 신세에 대한 한탄이나 원망, 삶에 대한 미련 등의 강렬한 감정은 거의 노출되지 않는다. 이로 보면 남원 윤씨는 사후의 일을 대비하려는 목적 하에 사적인 감정을 가능한 한 배제하거나 억제한 채 유서를 작성했던 것으로 여겨진다. 대신 그녀는 자기 내면을 드러냄에 있어 수신자가 상정되지 않는 방식으로 규방 여성들에게 익숙했던 탄식류 가사의 정조와 양식을 도입했던 것으로 보인다. 남원 윤씨에게 유서가 의무를 수행하고 타인과의 외적 소통을 도모하기 위한 수단이었다면, <명도자탄사>의 창작은 가사라는 장르를 경유하여 독백적으로 자신의 내면을 표현하려는 시도였던 것이다. <명도자탄사>에서 남원 윤씨는 남편이 부재하는 현실을 수용하고 자결을 결심한 뒤 가사를 창작하기까지의 심리적 변화를 보여준다. 그녀는 죽음이라는 추상적 개념을 시공간적 대상으로 형상화하면서 남편을 향한 감정을 표출하는 한편, 문식적 표현을 구사하며 작가적 의식을 드러내기도 하고, 죽음에 직면한 시점의 정신적 방황을 전면화하기도 하면서 사대부의 기록과는 전혀 다른 방식으로 열녀의 삶과 의식을 재현하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 시도에도 불구하고 그녀는 자신의 내면이 온전히 재현될 수 없다는 자각에 도달하는 바, 작품의 결말부는 남원 윤씨가 이러한 언어적 한계에 직면했음에도 불구하고 자신의 삶과 고통을 표현하려 분투하는 모습을 보여준다. 그 과정에서 남원 윤씨가 당사자인 자신조차 그 고통을 온전히 증언할 수 없다는 사실을 거듭 강조한다는 점은 주목을 요한다. 이를 통해 <명도자탄사>는 당사자가 아닌 남성 사대부에 의해 서술된 열녀 기록의 진실성뿐 아니라 재현의 윤리까지 문제 삼는 텍스트로서 그 의의를 재고할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the interiority of the chaste woman in the suicide notes and Myeongdojatansa (명도자탄사) written by Ms. Yoon of Namwon (남원윤씨, 1768~1801) and to highlight the significance of Myeongdojatansa. To accomplish these goals , this paper analyzes the characteristics of the suicide note and Myeongdojatansa comprehensively and explores the meaning of these two texts as related to Ms. Yoon. Ms. Yoon wrote nine suicide notes, where she repeatedly illustrates her internal conflict caused by the contradiction between ‘chastity’ (烈) and ‘filial piety’ (孝), her obsession with the concept of a “neat death”, her contemplation on the meaning of her own death, and her attitude towards others’ preparation for life after her death. She rarely expresses intense emotions such as grief, resentment, or regret, particularly in contrast to other women s suicide notes. This suggests that Ms. Yoon s suicide notes were a means to fulfill her duties and to communicate with her family members. On the other hand, her creation of Myeongdojatansa was an attempt to express her inner self in a monologue through the genre of Gasa (歌辭). In Myeongdojatansa, Ms. Yoon exhibits a psychological shift as she goes from accepting her husband’s death to embracing self-determination regarding her own death and the act of writing these lyrics. In the text, she expresses her feelings for her husband by shaping the abstract concept of death into a spatiotemporal object. In the meantime, the scene of her husband s death remains a kind of traumatic memory, and is repeatedly invoked in the work. Through this series of processes, Ms. Yoon seems to finally accept her reality. In addition, she exhibits an artist s consciousness through literary expression and directly articulating the wandering of her mind in the face of death. In this way, she represents the life and consciousness of a woman who is about to die in various ways that differ completely from the Sadeabu (士大夫) men’s records of the chaste woman. Despite her attempts, however, Ms. Yoon finally realizes that her inner self cannot be fully represented. Notwithstanding these linguistic limitations, Myeongdojatansa shows her struggling to describe her life and express the suffering she has never previously revealed as a response to extreme sadness and loneliness. She then repeatedly emphasizes the fact that even she herself cannot fully testify her own suffering. In this regard, Myeongdojatansa can be read as a text that questions not only the authenticity of the Sadeabu men’s records of the chaste woman but also the ethics of representation.
