대한제국기 기생에 관한 연구사(史) 검토 및 향후 연구과제

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 2000년대에 들어서면서부터 활발해진 대한제국기 기생에 관한 선행연구들을 1)음악학·무용학, 2)여성학·역사학, 3)기생제도 및 변천사, 4)기타 관련연구 이상 4개의 카테고리로 분류하여 축적된 연구성과와 한계점 등을 고찰하고, 이후 대한제국기 기생에 관련된 근대신문 DB구축현황과 온라인 활용방법을 제공하여 이들을 토대로 대한제국기 기생에 관한 향후 선결 연구과제 및 방향성을 제시하고자 한다. 대한제국기 기생에 관한 선행연구들을 종합적으로 분석해보면 다양한 한국학 분야에서 다각적인 접근이 이루어지기는 하였으나, 음악학, 무용학, 여성학, 역사학, 기생제도사 등 대부분의 연구가 2000년대에 집중적으로 진행되었고, 2010년 이후로는 관련분야의 연구가 매우 주춤한 실정이다. 하지만 2010년대에 들어서면서부터 대한제국기에 발행된 근대신문들의 디지털 DB화, 국사편찬위원회 한국학데이터베이스의 ｢한국사료총서｣, 고전번역원의 ｢고전원문｣ 등 기존 연구들에서는 검토·활용된 바가 없고, 아직 학계에 공개되지 않은 다양한 대한제국기 기생 관련기사 및 사료들이 매우 풍부하게 축적되어 왔다. 따라서 2000년대 이후 대한제국기 기생에 관한 연구가 미진한 현 상황 속에서 ｢대한제국기의 기생사｣가 『한국여성사』의 한 부분에 실제적으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 선행연구들에 대한 추가·보완적인 연구와 제분야에서의 연구적 활성화가 필요한 시점이다. 또한 대한제국기(1897~1910년) 한국인 발행 신문들에서는 찾아볼 수 없었던 다양한 기생관련 기록들이 당시의 일본어 신문들에도 다수 실려 있기 때문에 한국어(구(舊)한글, 국한문) 신문들에 대한 의존의 한계에서 벗어나, 대한제국기에 발행된 일본인 경영신문과 일본어 신문들을 대상으로 한 기생관련 기사의 발굴 및 적극적인 활용 또한 실제적으로 병행되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the preceding researches on Gisaeng during Daehan Empire Period which became active in 2000s, classified them into four categories of 1) Music Studies, Dance Studies 2) Women’s Studies, Historical Studies 3) Gisaeng System and History 4) Other Related researches, and reviewed the accumulative research results and limitations. This study also reviewed database on modern newspaper related to Gisaeng during Daehan Empire Period and online utilization method to suggest predetermined research tasks and directions for Gisaeng during Daehan Empire Period. In comprehensive analysis on preceding researches on Gisaeng during Daehan Empire Period, while there have been multilateral approaches from various Korean studies fields, most researches such as music studies, dance studies, women’s studies, historical studies, and history on Gisaeng mainly took place in 2000s and the researches on related field significantly slowed down after 2010. In 2010s, there was no review or utilization of existing researches including digital database of modern newspaper published during Daehan Empire Period, [Collection of Korean History Materials] in Korean History Database of National Institute of Korean History, and [Korean Classics] of Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics. Also, there are rich accumulations of numerous news articles and historical materials on Gisaeng during Daehan Empire Period that are not revealed in the academic field. Thus, there should be additional and complementary researches and active researches on preceding researches to make [History of Gisaeng During Daehan Empire Period] to settle as the part of [History of Korean Women] in the current situation of few researches on Gisaeng during Daehan Empire Period after 2000s. In addition, various Gisaeng-related records that are not found on newspaper published by Koreans in Daehan Empire Period are in Japanese newspaper, it is necessary to break away from relying on Korean newspapers to discover and actively utilize the newspapers published by Japanese and newspapers in Japanese language. The phased process on establishment of licensed prostitute system during the Korean Empire Period involved prostitute abolition policy in 1899, formation of district for prostitution in 1904, sexually transmitted disease testing in 1906, and taxation on prostitute in 1906. However, Gisang was not related to such process and Gisaeng was regarded to have contrasting social properties compared to prostitute. On September 25, 1908, ｢Gisaeng regulation law｣ was announced as ｢Modern Gisaeng System｣ while ｢Prostitute regulation law｣ was announced as ｢Licensed Prostitution system｣ individually. As a result, Gisaeng and prostitute were clearly differentiated in terms of law, policy, and society.
