조선 후기 여성의 개인적 자살에 대한 시선과 그 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선후기 의열의 명분을 얻지 못한 여성의 개인적 자살에 대한 시선을 읽어내고 여성들에게 자살이 어떠한 의미였는지 짚어보고자 한다. 정범조의 며느리 채씨는 어린 자식의 죽음을 연이어 겪다가 스스로 목숨을 끊었고 심대윤의 조카딸은 시모와의 심한 불화를 견디지 못하고 자살했다. 이들의 자살은 시부와 백부의 시선에서 후사에 대한 책임을 방기하고 불효를 행한 잘못으로 규정되었다. 정범조와 심대윤은 후사를 세울 의무로써의 자애와 절대적 실천으로써의 효가 어떠한 고통에도 불구하고 지켜져야 하는 가치임을 강조하며 이러한 일탈-자살-을 잠시 판단력이 흐려지거나 가르침을 제대로 받지 못한 개인적 자질의 문제로 이해했다. 그러나 채씨와 심씨는 정범조와 심대윤이 강조하는 삶의 의미에 동의하지 않았다. 외부로부터 강제된 삶의 의미는 이들이 피부로 겪는 고통을 이겨내는 데 실질적인 버팀목이 되지 못했다. 이들은 시대적으로 요구되었던 규범적 삶의 태도를 견지하기 위해 심각한 갈등과 상실의 고통을 감내하게 되지만, 이로 인한 심적 좌절은 고스란히 개인이 감당해야만 했다. 두 사람의 자살은 고통에 대한 호소로도 실질적인 도움을 받을 수 없는 현실, 무너진 세계를 견디지 못하고 선택한 죽음이었다. 정범조와 심대윤은 며느리와 질녀의 자살에 대해 자책과 회한을 드러냈으나 이는 채씨와 심씨가 고통을 겪은 시간에 대해서라기보다 자살을 결정하는 순간에 대한 것이었다. 당사자들은 내면적 상실과 처절한 상처에 대한 몸부림으로 스스로 삶을 저버리지만, 기록자들은 당장의 괴로움을 감내하면서 부녀로서의 행실을 묵묵히 수행했을 때 결국 고통에서 벗어나거나 고통의 대가를 보상받을 수 있으며 이것이 의미있는 부녀의 삶이라 여겼다. 채씨와 심씨의 개인적 자살에 대한 기록들은 이들의 자살을 막아서 온전한 삶을 이어가도록 하지 못한 것을 자책한다. 하지만 이러한 자책이 당사자들에게는 자신들이 애써 벗어난 무너진 세계로 소환하는 주문이 된다. 여기서 자살에 대한 당사자와 기록자의 상반된 시선을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to read the perspective of personal suicide of women who did not gain social justification in the late Joseon Dynasty and to point out what suicide meant to women. Chae, the daughter-in-law of Jeong Bum-jo, died of herself after suffering the deaths of young children, and Shim dae-yun s niece, Shim, committed suicide without enduring a severe conflict with her mother-in-law and husband s sister. In the eyes of the father-in-law and the eldest father, their suicide was defined as the fault of refraining from taking responsibility for the posterity and not fulfilling the duty of filial piety. Jeong Bum-jo and Shim Dae-yoon emphasized that the duty to connect the heir and the filial piety of absolute practice are values that must be kept despite any pain, and they understood this deviation -suicide- as a personal problem caused by a lack of judgment or poor teaching. However, Chae and Shim disagreed with the meaning of life emphasized by Jeong Bum-jo and Shim Dae-yun. The meaning of life forced from the outside has not been a real support for overcoming the pain they suffer in reality. They endure the pain of serious conflict and loss to maintain the normative attitude of life that has been required in the times, The mental frustration caused by this had to be handled by the individual. The suicide of the two was an escape from reality that, despite the appeal of suffering, could not receive practical help, and was a death that was no longer tolerated and willing to choose in a collapsed world. Jeong beom-jo and Shim dae-yun reveal regrets about the suicide of daughter-in-law and niece. However, this regret was not about the time Chae and Shim suffered, but about the moment when they decided to commit suicide. The parties gave up their lives to escape from internal loss and tragic wounds. However, the recorders thought that when they silently carried out their acts as women, enduring the sufferings of the moment, they could eventually get out of pain or be compensated for the suffering, and this was the meaningful life for a woman. Eventually, the records of Chae and Shim s suicide regret that they did not stop their suicide and lead to a meaningful life, but this rebuke is a spell for the parties to summon to a collapsed world that they have struggled to escape. Here, the conflicting eyes of the parties and the recorders on suicide are confirmed.
