국문 초록

오래전부터 자유주의학자들은 국가 간 무역이 분쟁을 감소시킨다고 주장하여 왔는데, 최근에는 무역-평화의 연결 관계를 무역국가 국내의 시장경제제도로 설명하려는 새로운 시도인 “상업적 평화모형”이 제시되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 “상업적 평화모형”을 남북한 관계에 적용하여, 남북한의 상품별 교역이 분쟁을 감소시키는지를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 자유 시장경제제도를 운영하고 있는 남한과 통제경제를 운영하고 있는 북한과의 교역은 남북한 분쟁에 영향을 주지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 그럼에도 불구하고 “상업적 평화모형”에 의하면 남북한의 교역은 여전히 남북한 간의 분쟁을 감소시키고 평화를 유도할 수 있는 중요한 수단 중 하나이다.

영문 초록

It is widely accepted that trade causes interstates peace, but debate persists about the causes underlying liberal peace. Recently “commercial peace theory” argues that free trade and free domestic free market, not just trade, promotes peace among states by removing an important foundation of domestic privilege that enhances the domestic power of societal groups likely to support war, and by empowering societal groups most opposed to war. Based on the theory, this study identifies how various commodity groups of trade flow between South and North Korea affect political conflicts(or cooperations) between two Koreas. The empirical results show that most commodity groups of trade flows between South and North Korea do not affect to political conflicts between two Koreas. But as “the commercial peace model” argues, trades between South and North Korea are still useful statecrafts for peace in Korea peninsular.
