孔子의 仁의 世界觀을 통해 본 헤르만헤세의 『데미안』

국문 초록

이 논문은 헤르만 헤세의 『데미안』의 줄거리를 통해 작가의 세계관을 살펴보고 이를 공자의 세계관을 중심으로 해석하고자 했다. 작가 헤르만 헤세는 동양철학에 관심을 가지고 공부했으며 그의 작품의 저변에는 동양사상이 어느 정도 자리하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 소설 『데미안』은 주인공 싱클레어가 성장기를 통해 자신의 두 세계를 긍정해 나가는 과정을 그렸다. 이 과정은 곧 스스로를 사랑하는 과정이며 스스로의 길을 개척하는 과정이다. 그는 이 과정은 누구나 단 하나밖에 가지지 않은 소중한 오솔길이라고 말한다. 모든 사람은 자신만의 길을 개척해가야 하는 숙명을 가지고 있지만 각자의 길을 가는 방식은 매우 상이하다. 싱클레어가 삶 속에서 많은 사람들을 만나고 그들을 통해 두 세계를 배우고 선택하는 과정을 겪으며 나를 찾아가는 과정은 매우 치열하며 때로는 이해하기 어렵다. 그러나 이러한 과정은 공유 할 수 없는 나만의 과정이고 그 누구와도 같을 수 없는 자기 수양의 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 공자는 仁의 사상을 통해 세계를 바라보고 인을 실천하기 위해 부단히 노력한 聖人이다. 그는 선천적으로 인한 본성을 타고난 인간이지만 세계를 살아가는 중에 닥쳐오는 시련과 물음을 끊임없는 공부를 통해 극복한다. 그리고 나를 지극히 사랑하고 그 맘과 같이 타인을 사랑함을 실현하기 위해 노력한다. 헤르만헤세와 공자는 모두 불우한 시대적 배경을 가지고 있었지만 그 세계 속에서 자신의 길을 찾고자 부단히 노력하고 끊임없이 사유함으로써 시대적 한계를 극복하고자 했다. 그들은 자신의 길을 찾는 과정에 배움과 사유를 바탕으로 하였으며 나에 대한 사랑과 세계에 대한 사랑을 가지고 있었다. 본 논문에서는 이 두 사람이 비록 시간적으로 매우 떨어져 있으나 그들이 지닌 세계관의 측면을 살펴본다면 기본적인 공통면을 찾을 수 있다고 보고 이를 기술한 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aimed at understanding the author’s view of the world through the story of Demian by Hermann Hesse and interpreting it on the basis of Confucius view of the world. Author Hermann Hesse was absorbed in and studied Oriental philosophy, resulting in some amounts of Oriental thoughts found in his works. In the novel Demian the main character Emil Sinclair positively narrates two kinds of his own worlds through his youth and growth period. It is the process of loving himself and pioneering his won world. He says it is the valuable pathway, the only process everyone can have in his life. Everyone has the fate to open his own way, however, very differently. It is very intense and sometimes difficult to understand for Sinclair to meet lots of people, to learn two kinds of world through relationship with them, to select one and finally find himself. However, it is the his own process that cannot be shared by others and the process of self-culture that cannot be same with that of any others. Confucius is the saint who tried to view the world through the thought of benevolence and to make incessant efforts to practice it. He is the man who is born with benevolent nature, however, through self-culture conquer the ordeals and questions resulting from the world to live in. Further, he extremely loves himself and like his own mind tries to love others and practice it. Both Hermann Hesse and Confucius have unfortunate backgrounds of the period, however, tried to conquer the limits of the time, by thinking of lots of problems and making ceaseless efforts to find out their own ways in that world. This was made on the basis of learning and thinking and with the love both for himself and the world. This study described them, thinking that the common aspects can be found from their view of the world, although one lived far removed from the period for the other to live in.
