이주공간 개념의 이론적 검토와 접경공간으로의 접근

국문 초록

이 글은 초국적 이주로 형성된 이주공간에 대한 국내 선행 연구들을 이론적으로 검토하고, 접경공간으로 개념적 전환의 가능성을 고찰하기 위해 국내 접경연구들의 개념 및 사용방식을 분석하였다. 기존 연구들에서 초국적 이주로 인해 형성·변형된 공간은 ‘이주공동체가 거주하는 공간, 초국적 사회공간, 다문화공간’ 등의 개념들로 연구되었다. 이주공동체가 거주하는 공간 개념은 이주자 집단을 단일한 국가·민족·종족 집단으로 전제하는 방법론적 민족주의의 오류를 지닌다. 초국적 사회적 공간 개념은 이러한 오류를 수정하고 있으나 이주자들이 생활하는 공간과 기존 거주자들과 교류하여 만들어내는 공간을 내포하지 않는다. 초국적 이주로 인해 형성·변형된 공간에 대한 국내의 중요한 연구를 차지하고 있는 다문화공간 개념은 다문화주의라는 이론적 토대로 인해 한계 갖는다. 다음으로 이주공간을 접경공간으로 개념화 할 수 있는지에 대한 가능성을 고찰하기 위해 국내 접경연구를 ‘군사적·지리적 경계로서의 접경과 접촉지대로서의 접경 연구’로 나눠살펴보았다. 군사적·지리적 경계로서의 접경지역은 정치적인 경계선인 국경을 사이에 둔 국가들 간의 정치·외교적 상황에 따라서 접경지역 내 대립과 상호작용이 존재하는 물리적·지리적 공간을 의미한다. 접경을 ‘접촉지대’로 인식하여 지리적 공간뿐만 아니라 인간세계의 내적 공간으로서 접경을 바라보는 연구들은 ‘문화횡단’, ‘혼종성’, ‘교차성’, ‘경계사유하기’, ‘경계지대’, ‘문화 접경지대’ 등과 같은 개념들을 통해서 접경공간을 설명하고 있다. 이 글은 프랫의 접촉지대에 착목하여 이주공간을 ‘한 국가 내에 존재한 다양한 민족과 문화들이 조우하고 충돌하며 융화되어가는 공간’이자 ‘다양한 문화와 가치가 조우하고 교류하여 서로 융합하고 공존하는 장’인 접경공간으로 사고할 것을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

In this study, the leading domestic studies on migration spaces formed by transnational migration were reviewed and the concept definition and usage of domestic border studies were analyzed to examine the possibility of conceptual transformation into contact zones. The concepts of domestic researches on the space where transnational migrants and native people meet were divided into migrant communities, transnational social field, and multicultural spaces, and the limitations of each concept were considered. The concept of space where migrant communities reside has the fallacy of methodological nationalism, which presupposes immigrant groups as a single national, ethnic, and ethnic group. The concept of transnational social field corrects this error, but does not imply a space for migrants to live in and a space created by interacting with existing residents. The concept of multicultural spaces are limited by the theoretical basis of multiculturalism. Next, to examine the possibility of conceptualizing migration space as contact zones, I divided the domestic border studies into border studies as military and geographical boundaries and as contact areas. Border areas as military and geographical boundaries refer to physical and geographical spaces where confrontation and interaction exist within the border area depending on political and diplomatic situations between countries that have a political border. Studies that recognize the border as contact zones view the borders as inner spaces of the human world as well as a geographical spaces explain the border spaces through concepts such as transculturation, hybridization, crossing, borderland and cultural border zone. This article argued that the migration space should be considered as contact zones, places where various ethnic groups and cultures present in a country encounter, collide, and merge and coexist with each other, as well as places where various cultures and values meet and exchange.
