전유와 재창조 - <더 리턴드 Les Revenants>과 <부산행>에 나타난 좀비와 가족

국문 초록

서아프리카에서 아이티로, 다시 미국으로 건너온 좀비는 다른 괴물들에 비해 상대적으로 많은변형을 겪은 괴물로 나타나고 있다. 변종 바이러스만큼이나 다양하게 변형된 모습으로 재현된 좀비는 미국을 중심으로 주로 B급 영화나 비디오 게임을 통해 소비되던 양상을 벗어나 무한정한 영역으로 확장되고 있다. 대중문화 연구에서 좀비는 흔히 사회의 불안과 모순을 반영하는 괴물이라는 입장으로 고찰되어 왔다. 따라서 한국과 프랑스에 유입된 좀비들은 이들이 탄생한 국가와 문화가 갖고 있는 불안과 공포를 재현하고 있는 대상으로 볼 수 있을 것이다. 영미권에서 대표적으로 거론되는 좀비 영화의 대가 로메로의 작품들이 좀비의 공격에 속수무책인 인간들을 통해 60년대 후반 미국 사회의 백인 중산층 가족을 해체하고 가족이 반영하는 보수적인 가치를 그대로 공격하고 있는반면 <부산행>(2016)과 <더 리턴드>(2012)는 좀비에 대항한 인간들과 좀비가 된 인간들이 새로운연대, 즉 새로운 가족을 만드는 과정에 집중하고 있다. 또한 좀비 대 인간의 단순화된 선악 구도에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 새로운 관계에 대한 정의를 드러낸다. 두 영화에서 목격되는 새로운 가족의 탄생은 가족의 가치 복권을 통해 가부장적인 권력을 재확인하고 재확립하는 재난영화 특유의 보수적인 이데올로기를 반영하는 것으로 단정적으로 해석될 수는 없다. 이러한 이유로 <더 리턴드>에서 만들어지는 새로운 가족은 생존자들의 연대가 아니라 좀비와 인간으로 구성된 연대로 부터 생겨난다. 관습적이며 보수적인 영화로 많은 비판을 받는 <부산행>에서도 “가족”의 특수성은 발견된다. 영화에서 항상 대항 집단의 주체로 상정되는 남성들은 사라지고 오로지 여성들만이 생존한다. 따라서 우리는 임산부와 혈연관계가 없는 여자아이가 앞으로 구성할 새로운 가족을 통해서 단일 인종으로 구성된 가부장적 이성애 가족이라는 한국의 전통적 가치를 전승하는 전통적 가족 구조와 그 가족이 반영하는 가치를 해체하는 장치로의 가능성을 부분적으로 나마 엿볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Zombies that have come from West Africa to Haiti and then to the United States are appearing as monsters that have undergone relatively many variations compared to other monsters. Zombies, which are reproduced in various forms as variant viruses, are expanding into the unlimited area, mainly from the United States, which has been consumed mostly by B-rated movies and video games. In popular culture studies, zombies have often been considered as monsters that reflect social anxiety and contradictions. Therefore, zombies in Korea and France can be seen as objects that reproduce the anxiety and fear of the countries and cultures in which they are born. While works of Romero the master of zombie movies, who is one of the most mentioned in British and American society, have dissolved the white middle-class family of the American society in the late 1960s and attacked the conservative values reflected by the family, (2016) and (2012) focus on the process of creating a new solidarity, a new family which is made by humans who are either against zombies or becoming zombies. It also reveals the definition of a new relationship through the symmetry of human versus human or evil humanity and helpless zombies, one step further from the simplified good and evil composition of zombies versus human. The birth of a new family witnessed in both movies can not be predicatively interpreted as reflecting a conservative ideology specific to a disaster movie that reaffirms and re-establishes patriarchal power through the reinstatement of the family value. For this reason, the new family created in doesn’t emerge by a solidarity of survivors, but a zombie and human age. The special character of “family” is also found in which is criticized as a conventional and conservative film. In the film, men who are always regarded as the subjects of the opposing group disappear and only women survive. Therefore, we can partially see the possibility of a device that dissolves a patriarchal heterosexual family composed of a single race which is the traditional family structure that inherits the traditional value of Korea and the value reflected by them through a new family that will be composed of pregnant women and girls who are unrelated by blood.
