국문 초록

본 연구는 기업의 운전자본관리의 핵심요소인 현금전환주기요소(재고보유일수, 매출채권회수일수, 매입채무변제일수)가 수익성(매출액순이익률)에 미치는 영향에 대해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 실증분석에는 포브스 글로벌 2000(Forbes Global 2000)에서 선정한 자동차 산업의 42개, 전기전자 산업의 29개 글로벌 기업의 8년간(2008-2015년) 재무데이터를 사용하였다. 현금전환주기요소와 수익성 간의 인과관계를 파악하기 위해 2008년 글로벌 금융위기 발생 시점을 기준으로 위기기(2008-2011년)와 회복기(2012-2015년) 두 기간으로 나누어 패널데이터분석을 하였다. 그 결과, 산업별, 기간별로 유의한 차이를 발견하였고 글로벌 경제상황의 변화를 고려한 운전자본관리 전략에 대한 이론적, 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다. 하지만 다른 실증분석 연구에서와 같이 본 연구의 결과를 일반화하는 데에는 한계가 있어, 중요한 글로벌 사건을 중심으로 기간별 분석을 수행하는 연구가 더 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study intends to empirically analyze the effect of cash conversion cycle elements (the core of working capital management, i.e., days of inventory outstanding, receivables outstanding, and payables outstanding) on profitability (return on sales). For the analysis, we used the eight-year (2008-2015) financial data collected from 42 and 29 global firms in the automotive and electrical-electronics industries, respectively, ranked in the “Forbes Global 2000.” To discover the causal relationship between cash conversion cycle elements and profitability, we performed panel data analysis on each for two sub-periods, i.e., the crisis period (2008-2011) and the recovery period (2012-2015), based on the occurrence of the global financial crisis in 2008. In the results, we found significant differences by industry and by period and proposed theoretical and managerial insights into working capital management strategies in consideration of the changes in the global business environment. However, as is the case for other empirical studies, this study has a limitation in the generalization of the results. Therefore, more studies conducting periodic analyses based on important global events are needed
