석전 박한영에 미친 보조선의 영향

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 근대 한국불교의 대표적 고승이라 할 수 있는 석전 박한영이 보조 지눌에 대하여 어떠한 인식을 지녔으며, 두 사상가 사이에 공통점이 무엇인지를 밝히고자 하였다. 서로 다른 시대를 살았던 보조와 석전의 삶은 표면적으로 많은 차이가 있음에도 불구하고 선·교 양 방면에 있어서 지극한 경지에 이르렀다는 점과 철저한 수행을 바탕으로 한 결사와 후학양성의 삶으로 매진하였던 점에 있어서 공통점이 있다. 비록 적은 분량이지만 석전의 글 속에서 그가 보조의 저서로 인식한 『진심직설』의 내용을 인용하고 있는 것을 비롯하여 보조의 영향을 확인할 수 있다. 보조와 석전의 사상 간의 공통점으로는 하택 신회에 대한 긍정적 평가와 더불어 보조가 돈오점수를 주장하였는데 석전 또한 증오의 폐단을 비판하고 있어서 돈오 후의 지속적인 수행을 공통적으로 강조하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 교가의 자굴병(自屈病)과 선가의 자고병(自高病)을 경계하고 선교일치와 계율을 중시하고 있는 점도 두 사상가 간의 공통점이라 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 근대 한국불교에서 차지하는 석전의 위상을 제고하고, 아울러 보조와 석전 간의 영향 관계와 더불어 두 사상가의 사상 간에 공통점을 밝힘으로서 보조 지눌이 근대 한국불교에 끼친 영향의 지평을 확대하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

In this paper, the writer tries to investigate the cognition of Seokjeon Park Han-young, a representative Buddhist monk of modern Korea, on Bojo Jinul and to reveal the common ground of the two thinkers. While ostensibly there is much difference within the life of Bojo and Seokjeon, who lived in different times, they have common ground that they reached an extreme level in Seon school and Dontrine school and that they devoted themselves to association and training junior scholars based on their thorough practice. Although it is a small amount, Bojo’s effect can be seen in Seokjeon’s work, including the fact that he cites the content of 『Jinsimjikseol』, as Bojo’s work. The common ground between Bojo and Seokjeon are to give a positive evaluation to Hataek Sinhoe and to emphasize gradual practice after sudden enlightenment. Seokjeon also emphasized continuous practice because he criticized the negative effect of sudden enlightenment like Bojo’s opinion. Also, the two thinkers shared common ground that they are wary of the self-subservience disease of Doctrine school and self-arrogance disease of Seon school. In this paper, in addition to enhancing the status of the Seokjeon in modern Korean Buddhism, the writer wanted to expand the horizon of the influence of the Bojo Jinul on modern Korean Buddhism by making clear the common ground between the ideas of the two thinkers, as well as the influencing relationship between Bojo and Seokjeon.
