한암을 통해 본 한국 근대불교에서 지눌의 위상

국문 초록

한암의 보조사상 계승에 대해서는 학계에서 별다른 이견이 없다. 보조와 한암의 선사상과 수행관이 서로 유사하고 부합한다는 점이 주요한 근거로 제시되고 있다. 또 문헌상으로도 『선문촬요』 편찬에서 『보조법어』 간행으로 이어지는 일련의 과정을 통해, 그리고 결사를 통해서도 보조와 한암의 사상적 계승 관계를 증명하고 있다. 그렇지만 사상적 계승관계의 근거를 제시하는 것과 더불어 그러한 현상이 나타난 동기와 배경에 대한 고찰이 필요하다. 한암은 선 수행 공동체와 수행체계를 정비하는 데 평생을 진력했다. 이러한 노력을 위한 모델과 좌표가 필요했을 때 그는 지눌에 주목했다. 수행을 향한 결기와 정혜결사로 구체화된 수행시스템은 한암이 보기에 한국선의 모범적 형태로 삼기에 충분했을 것이다. 그리고 일제강점기라는 정치사회적 특수 상황 속에서 한국선의 정체성을 대표할 만한 선 수행자가 필요했고, 그 일환으로 한암은 도의종조설을 통해 지눌을 불러냈다. 지눌의 정혜결사에서 나타나는 권력과 세속적 이해관계로부터 수행공동체의 독립성 유지와 선 수행체계의 정립이라는 특징은, 일제강점기 한암이 봉착하고 있었던 문제의식의 단초를 열어주었다. 지눌과 한암의 계승관계는 선사상이나 결사 행적이 부합됨을 넘어 문제의식과 해결책의 공감이라는 관점에서 볼 때, 근대시기 한국불교의 문제의식까지 담아낼 수 있는 좀 더 확장된 논의가 가능할 것이다.

영문 초록

There is little disagreement in academia about Bang Hanam (方漢岩, 1876-1951)’s succession of the Philosophy of Bojo Chinul (普照 知訥, 1158~1210). It is suggested that the two men s ideas and practical theories are similar and consistent with each other. In addition, through various literature and association (結社), the ideological succession relationship is also proven. Nevertheless, it is also necessary to consider the motivations and background of the ideological succession. Hanam has made a lifelong effort to reconstruct the Chan practical community and establish a practical system. When models and criteria were needed to make this effort, he paid attention to Bojo Chinul. The finality for the practice and associations for the practice system was sufficient to be an exemplary form of Korean Chan Buddhism. And in the political and social situation of the Japanese colonial period, there was a need for a good practitioner to represent the identity of Korean Chan Buddhism. And as part of that, Hanam called Chinul. Chinul s association reveals the characteristics that maintain the independence of the performing community from power and secular interests. It also shows that the system of Chan practice system was newly established. This feature opened the door to the problem consciousness that Hanam encountered during the Japanese colonial rule. The succession relationship between Chinul and Hanam will be able to be discussed more in terms of the sympathy of problem consciousness and solution.
