국문 초록

『디브야바다나(Divyāvadāna)』는 38개의 이야기들 또는 아바다나들의 모음집이다. 대표적인 불전문학작품의 하나로 여겨지는 『디브야바다나』는 업의 과보를 중심으로 하는 쉽고 흥미로운 이야기들 속에서 교훈적 내용을 담고 있다. 「루빠와띠아바다나(Rūpāvatī-avadāna)」는 루빠와띠(Rūpāvatī)가 여러 번의 전생 속에서 육신 보시를 통한 복업을 짓는 이야기로서 『디브야바다나』의 38개의 이야기들 중 32번째 이야기이다. 그 내용을 보면, 붓다는 보시에 관한 설법을 한 후에 루빠와띠의 이야기를 설한다. 갓 태어난 자식을 먹으려는 배고픈 어미를 보면서 루빠와띠는 배고픔을 달래주고자 자신의 가슴을 도려내어 그녀에게 먹인다. 그리고 나서 그녀는 두 가지 진실한 말(satyavacana)의 서원을 한다. 하나는 그녀의 가슴이 돌아오는 것이고 다른 하나는 그녀가 남자로 전환하는 것이다. 서원이 이루어져 여성 루빠와띠는 남성 루빠와따로 몸이 바뀌고 왕이 된다. 그때 붓다는 루빠와띠의 전생의 두 가지 삶을 설명한다. 첫째는 새의 무리에게 자신의 눈과 몸을 보시한 짠드라쁘라바로서이고 둘째는 배고픈 암호랑이에게 자신을 먹인 브라흐마쁘라바로서이다. 「루빠와띠아바다나」는 내러티브 방식을 통하여 업과 보시 사상을 바탕으로 한 불교적 가르침을 전달함으로써 출가자와 재가자 모두 쉽게 접할 수 있는 특징을 보이고 있다. 「루빠와띠아바다나」의 내러티브 구조와 내용 분석에 있어서, 이에 상응하는 다른 범어본과 한역본 등과의 비교 연구는 『디브야바다나』의 아바다나(avadāna)들이 전달하고자 했던 메시지나 내용에 대한 이해를 제공해 준다. 그리고 「루빠와띠아바다나」에는 여타의 자따까나 아바다나들과는 달리 두 단계의 진실한 말의 서원이 등장한다. 이외에도 「루빠와띠아바다나」는 핵심 주제의 하나인 변성남자(變成男子)를 통하여 당시의 여성관을 흥미롭게 다루고 있다. 이는 이후 대승경전들을 통해 다루어지는 변성성불(變性成佛) 사상과 맞닿아 있어서 그 의미가 남다르다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Divyāvadāna consists of 38 stories or avadānas. As one of the best Buddhist narrative works, the Divyāvadāna contains easy and interesting stories based on the idea of karma and result. The Rūpāvatī-avadāna is the 32nd of 38 stories in the Divyāvadāna. It is a story about merit-making based on body offering through former lives. The story is thus. After the dharma talk on the giving(dāna), the Buddha introduces the story of Rūpāvatī. Seeing the hungry woman who tries to eat her newborn child, Rūpāvatī cuts her own breasts to feed the woman. Then she makes aspirations based on two words of truth. One is to take her breasts back and the other is the transformation of her female body into male one. Finally, her body is transformed into male one and Rūpāvatī becomes Rūpāvata who later invited to be the king of Utpalāvatī. Then the Buddha expounds the two former lives of Rūpāvatī. Firstly, she was Candraprabha who gave his eyes and body to the flock of birds. Secondly, she was Brahmaprabha who gave his body to the hungry tigress. The Rūpāvatī-avadāna aims to teach the Buddhist idea and thought based on karma and result using narrative format. So it is easily accessible to both monastics and laity. The comparative study between the Rūpāvatī-avadāna and other Sanskrit and Chinese counterparts about its narrative structure and content provides the clear understanding on the intentions of the avadānas of the Divyāvadāna including the Rūpāvatī-avadāna. Different from other avadānas and jātakas, the Rūpāvatī-avadāna shows two stages of the words of truth. Besides, the Rūpāvatī-avadāna deals with the views on women through the gender transformation which is the one of its key issues. This reflects the idea of gender transformation for enlightenment of the Mahāyāna.
