개화기 여학교의 교과 및 비교과 교양교육

국문 초록

본 연구는 여학교 교양교육의 뿌리를 찾아서, 개화기에 실시된 서구 근대식 최초의 여학교의 교과 및 비교과 교양교육을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위하여 1886년과 1887년에 각각 문을 연 조선 최초의 서구 근대식 여학교인 이화학당과 정신여학교에서 실시된 교양교육을 연구 대상으로 한다. 이들 학교에서 실시된 교과 및 비교과 교양교과목과, 방법 및 운영 사례는 오늘 날의 교양교육을 위한 기본 참고자료로 이용가능 할 것이다. 주지하다시피 개화기에는 남성중심사회로서 남자아이들만의 교육을 위한 서당이 있었고, 여 아는 교육의 대상이 아니었다. 여성천시풍토 가운데서 여아를 위한 교육기관의 설립과 교육과정 을 고찰하는 일은 매우 의미심장한 일일 것이다. 특히 최초의 여학교 교육은 여타 조선의 여학교 설립과 운영에 모델로서 작용하여 영향을 미쳤으므로 더욱 의미있다. 기독교 여성 선교사 메리 스크랜턴과 엘러스 벙커에 의해 설립된 이화학당과 정신여학교는 기독교 선교가 목적이었으므로 성경을 중요 교과목으로 다루면서도 산술, 한문, 영어, 지리, 체조, 도화, 음악을 교양 교육 교과 목으로 가르쳤다. 특히 이 두 학교는 비교과 교양교육을 활성화 하였는데, 여성선교사들은 비교 과 활동을 여학생들에게 권고하였다. 대표적인 비교과활동들은 학생회활동으로 문학회, 토론회, 선교회, YWCA 등에 전교 여학생들이 참여하였고 교양 교과목인 체육과 음악과목은 비교과 활 동과 연계되어 교내 체육활동과 교내 외 합창을 위시한 음악활동으로 연계되었다. 특히 당시의 전교생 기숙사 학교생활은 선 후배간의 멘토와 멘티로서 협동심은 물론 공적 질서관념과 사회성 을 형성하는데 결정적인 역할을 했다. 그리하여 전국순회공연을 포함한 교내 외 합창, 농촌계몽 운동, 구호물 보내기 등 전교생 대부분이 각각의 학생단체에 가입하여 사회 지도자로서 활발하 게 봉사활동에 참여했다.

영문 초록

This article aims to study the programs of liberal arts education and extracurricular activities conducted by the first western-style girls schools in late Chosen Dynasty. As a way of studying, I will exam the education system for liberal arts education at Ewha Hakdang and Jungshin Girls School, the first modern educational institution for girls in Chosen. The systems, methods, and management conditions of liberal arts education conducted by these two girls schools can also be served as a reference for our present liberal arts education. Ewha Hakdang in 1886 and Jungshin Girls School in 1887 was built by christian women missionaries Mary Scranton, Annie Ellers. These two girls schools, the first modern girls schools which greatly influenced on education system of the other girls school in Korea taught girls Bible as an essential subject focussing on the core value for Christianity, and Chinese letter, math, geography, as well as English, music as liberal arts education. Most of all, christian women missionaries Mary Scranton, Annie Ellers encouraged students to take part in a variety of extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities at that time included student councils, such as literary meeting, debating society, mission, YMCA. All students participated in these student councils. P.E and music in campus activities as liberal arts education were connected off-campus programs such as sports, chorus, and playing instrument. Especially, Ewha Hakdang and Jungshin Girls School ran residential schools for the whole students. It was crucial for residential schools at that time to enable students to develop a sense of cooperation, order, and sociality between seniors and juniors as mentor and mentee. Also, most of students took part in various volunteer activities including a tour of the country, enlightenment movement for rural communities, and dispensing relief supplies as leaders.
