인종주의자 휴스턴 스튜어트 챔버레인의 종교관: 그의 대표작 『19세기의 토대들』을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 유럽인종주의 역사에서 세기 전환기 대표적 인물로 꼽히는 휴스턴 스튜어트 챔버레인의 인종관과 종교관을 다루고자 한다. 영국 태생인 그는 일찍이 독일 음악가 리하르트 바그너와 프랑스 인종주의자 고비노의 영향 아래 아리안주의와 반유대주의적 사고를 정립해 갔다. 그의 인종주의는 19세기 후반 성장하고 있었던 독일의 극우세력에 영향을 미쳤으며 나아가 나치즘에 이데올로기적 토대를 제공했다고 평가되어 왔다. 그러나 그의 인종주의는 극우라는 일단의 정치세력을 넘어 광범한 독일 교양시민계층에 강한 영향을 미쳤음에 틀림없다. 이런 맥락에서 주목될 수 있는 것이 1897년 출간되어 널리 보급된 『19세기의 토대들』이란 그의 대표작이다. 이 책은 통상적인 역사교양서를 표방하는 듯했으나 철저하게 그가 확신 한 인종주의적 관점을 중심에 두고 유럽사를 자의적으로 해석한 것이었다. 특히 이 책은 종교, 그중에서도 기독교의 역사에 큰 비중을 두고 유럽사를 읽어내고 있었다. 그리고 이때 그에게 기독교는 ‘게르만 인종의 종교’였고,또 그는 이런 인식을 바탕으로 기독교의 역사를 재해석해 내고 있었다. 그리고 이런 그의 태도는 단순히 역사해석의 차원을 넘어 ‘기독교의 쇄신 내지 개혁’이란 실천적 요구와 연결되어 있었다. 이런 그의 종교인식의 목표는 궁극적으로는 인종주의적 세계관의 확산에 있었다. 이 글에서는 챔버레인의 문제작 『토대들』을 통해 전형적으로 나타난 인종주의적 종교인식의 면모를 살피고자 한다. 그리고 나아가 그의 종교인식이 세기말 인종주의 담론의 확산에 동원되어 적지 않은 영향력을 행사했음을 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

Houston Stewart Chamberlain was a fervent supporter of Richard Wagner in the latter half of 19th century; however, the British-born independent writer was also best known as an anti-Semite. He is today remembered primarily as a racial theorizer and precursor of Nazi ideologues. Yet to consider him as a corrosive precursor of Nazi ideologues is to run the risk of overlooking him as an intellectual charlatan who influenced not only Hitler and the nationalistic radical movement but also, in a very particular way, the intellectual middle class. His major anti-Semitic work, Die Grundlagen des 19. Jahrhunderts (The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century), was first published in 1899 and masqueraded as a cultural history of Europe. This controversial and widely read text traces the historical progression for what Chamberlain might have termed the Germanic millennium. He interpreted Europe s history as a history of hostile racial struggles between the Jews and Aryans. So, the enemy Other in Die Grundlagen was portrayed as the destructive force represented by Jews; the Self was the creative or regenerative will and abilities of Aryans. And in his work, he tried to interpret European history with a focus on Christian history. He thought that the Christianity was the religion for the Aryan race. It began with the birth of Jesus Christ. But it was his idea that the Christianity was fallen by the Jews. So, he had particularly attacked “Judaised Christianity”. Here Chamberlain offers the possibility of meaningful action against a known enemy through the reform of Christianity. On his claim, it was possible by removing the Jewish influence. His work is framed in terms of a resolute racist agenda and, importantly, builds on Germany’s ability to extinguish the Semitic roots of its religious heritage. This paper tried to explore how the perception of race and religion was represented in the writing of Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Furthermore it examines his enthusiasm for the complete reform of Christianity, which contributed to the expansion of antisemitism.
