This study aims to read M. Butterfly in terms of representation and parody. The 1980s saw the advent of critical issues of representation, anti-representation, post-colonialism, post-imperialism, and gender studies. Hwang s M. Butterfly takes advantage of the technique of parody to mimic and criticize the aforementioned critical concepts of colonialism, imperialism, and gender bias in the canonical original text, Giacomo Puccini s Madama Butterfly. In general, Hwang s theatrical intention seems to satisfy the expectations of white mainstream spectators, theatrical scholars and critics. This study, however, goes the opposite way to critically re-evaluate the self-imposed limits of Hwang s writing strategy of parody ; the double limits of both privileging of the white male protagonist Rene Gallimard as dominant narrator of the crucial mise-en-scène and granting the quintessential initiative of the ‘director of the drama within the drama, G. Puccini s Madama Butterfly. As a result, contrary to Hwang s theatrical intention, Chinese character Song Lilling s voice as ethnic minority remains silent or ignored. Hwang s parodic theatrical performance fails to write back the white mainstream s discursive order and as a result the drama is co-opted to the dominant discourse and the political correctness of white mainstream audience. In this study, we are going to read Hwang s M. Butterfly as a depoliticized, dehistoricized, and romanticizing play that has no manifest residue of resistance and political praxis to challenge colonialism, imperialism, and gender bias.
