국문 초록

본 연구는 복제인간의 삶을 그리고 있는 카즈오 이시구로의 『나를 보내지 마』를 인간과 비인간의 관계를 탐색해 볼 수 있는 텍스트로 바라보면서, 이 둘 사이의 관계와 포스트휴먼 생명윤리를 읽어보려고 한다. 포스트휴먼 생명윤리는 생명/죽음을 권력과 정치의 맥락에서 읽기 시작한 미셸 푸코의 논의에서부터 찾아보려 한다. 푸코의 생명 정치를 비판, 확장한 조르지오 아감벤을 거쳐 포스트휴먼시대의 생명정치가 갖는 윤리적 시사점을 찾아보려는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. 복제인간이라는 비인간의 삶을 다루고 있는 본 텍스트에서 인간 종 너머와의 대화를 관찰하고, 포스트휴먼 시대의 생명과 죽음을 생명 정치의 개념에서 시작하여 로지 브라이도티의 조에윤리학으로 확장시켜 사유해본다. 복제인간의 삶이 인간중심의 근대적 생명 정치를 은유적으로 그리고 있음을 비판적으로 읽고, 나아가 생명과 죽음을 재위치시키는 포스트휴먼 조에윤리학의 적용가능성을 탐색해본다.

영문 초록

This study seeks to explore the relationships between humans and non-humans, specifically clones, in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go as well as the posthuman ethical stance in the text. To understand how life has been considered through human history and how life is depicted in the story, this study first discusses Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben’s theoretical interpretations on bio-power or bio-politics. Foucault analyzed how bio-power has been employed to distinguish, discriminate, exploit and even kill the under-privileged such as slaves, immigrants and the poor in modern society. Agamben pushed Foucault’s interpretation further and he described bio-politics’ violence and inhumane treatment of human beings. The novel reveals the ways in which the mechanism of modern bio-politics works in order to rationalize the discrimination against clones. In this sense, the clones in the story can be regarded as a metaphor for the bare life from Agamben’s analysis. This study also examines how Rosi Braidotti’s posthuman ethics is developed in the text. The novel suggests an ethical realm in which to deal with the lives of non-human beings and a possible approach on how death could be perceived in the posthuman era.
