판화예술로 본 金正浩의 ｢大東輿地圖｣

국문 초록

김정호는 지리지 연구와 지도제작에 평생을 바쳤다. 많은 필사본과 목판본 지도를 제작해 보았다. 이 모든 것은 결국 ｢대동여지도｣를 위한 삶이자 작업이었다고 해도 지나치지 않을 법하다. 오로지 지도에만 매달린 결과, ｢대동여지도｣를 통해 자신이 살던 조선과 조선의 강산에 대한 생각을 정리하고 완성했다. ｢대동여지도｣는 한국지도사에서 가장 위대한 업적일 뿐만 아니라, 한국판화사의 위치도 크고 높다. 조선사회의 몰락기 열악한 환경을 딛고 김정호는 조선문화사를 대표하는 문화유산을 탄생시켰다. 개인과 사회의 시대적 여건이 어려운 가운데 ｢대동여지도｣ 같은 이만한 역작을 낸 것은 김정호의 당당한 위대함이자, 몰락해가던 조선이 녹록치 않았음을 자랑한다. 김정호는 대형의 목판화 ｢대동여지도｣를 구상하며 목질이 부드러운 피나무를 선택했다. 공방시스템이 미흡한 상황에서 경제적 상품가치를 포기하고 조선의 모습을 용이하게 새기려는 의중도 읽혀진다. 이처럼 고려나 조선시대 전통판화에서 전혀 쓰지 않던 피나무의 선택은 도전이자 거의 반란에 가깝다. 분명 김정호는 ｢지구전후도｣나 여러 본의 조선전도를 통해서 전통적 판각기술을 누구보다 충분히 습득했다. 허나 그 전통기법을 과감히 버렸다. 새 시도의 혁신과 창조성은 바로 판화예술의 신기원이자 김정호가 의식한 근대정신의 소산이라고 생각된다. 또 김정호가 섬세한 판각기술을 내세우기보다는 조선지형의 이미지를 살리는데 피나무의 선정은 성공적이었다. 김정호의 ｢대동여지도｣는 Optical Art나 All-over Painting 같은 현대회화의 인상을 짙게 풍긴다. 회화적 조형미가 빼어난 대형 지도로 어느 지역의 문화에서도 찾아볼 수 없는, 세계지도사에서 독보적 형식을 갖춘 것이기에 자랑할 만하다.

영문 초록

Kim Jeong-ho devoted his life to the work of the maps. He tried to make many wooden prints and manuscripts. It is not too much to say that all these works are because of the publication of DaedongYeojido. At the result of his endeavor, he could make revision of his thought about Choseon and the landscape of Choseon. DaedongYeojido is the greatest work not only in the history of Korean map but also in the history of Korean print making. He accomplished the representative cultural inheritance despite of the difficult situation in the fall of the Choseon period. Therefore, we clearly can see the pride of Choseon and how remarkable Kim Jeong-ho is. Kim Jeong-ho chose the linden [lime] tree which is a soft-wooded tree when he conceived an idea of the large-sized wooden print DaedongYeojido. We could read his mind that he preferred the way to engrave the Choseon land easily than value of the economical points ,in the situation of the insufficient craft room system. The choice of the linden [lime] tree which was not used at all in Goryeo neither in Choseon means a revolt rather than a challenge. He achieved a complete mastery of the skill of traditional wood cutting after working with many complete maps of Choseon and Jigujeonhudo (Map of the world) but he gave up the traditional techniques drastically. I think that the innovation and the creativity is the new epoch in the print arts and the creature of the modern mental. Also choosing the linden [lime] tree to reveal the image of Choseon landscape rather than promoting delicate skill of wood cutting is successful. DaedongYeojido of Kim Jeong-ho impressed as modern painting such as Optical art or all-over painting. It is deserved to acclaim that not only has outstanding pictorial beauty of formative as a large sized map but also has dominant forms in the history of the world map.
