논픽션의 올바른 자리매김을 위한 시론

국문 초록

픽션은 창작해낸 허구의 이야기이고, 논픽션은 허구적 창작물이 아닌 사실에 입각하여 쓴 작품이다. 논픽션이 픽션과 변별되는 지점, 사실(fact)과 허구(fiction)의 변별되는 지점을 고찰해볼 수 있다. 기록문학인 르포르타주로 님 웨일즈의 『아리랑』을 꼽을 수 있고, 국내저작으로는 유동우의 수기 『어느 돌멩이의 외침』, 황석영의 『죽음을 넘어 시대의 어둠을 넘어』와 윤재걸 기자의 『작전명령 화려한 휴가』 등을 들 수 있다. 마르코 폴로의 『동방견문록』처럼 탐험과 여행을 기록하는 형식의 기행문이나 여행기도 논픽션의 범주에 들어간다. 한국의 대표작으로 혜초가 쓴 『왕오천축국전』이 있다. 근대의 여행기로는 이태준의 『소련기행』, 김태준의 『연안기행』, 김사량의 『노마만리』를 들 수 있다. 전기 혹은 평전 형식의 작품은 개인사의 범주를 넘어 역사의 한 갈래로도 볼 수 있다. 예수의 복음서를 비롯해 소크라테스, 플루타르코스 영웅전 등의 거대서사에서 그 예를 찾아볼 수 있다. 동양의 전기 문학은 사마천의 『사기』를 들 수 있다. 국내 전기물 중에 뛰어난 저작으로 『윤동주 평전』이 있다. 일기 역시 자전적인 기록으로 훌륭한 논픽션이 될 수 있다. 이순신의 『난중일기』와 같은 작품은 사회사ㆍ정치사적 중요한 자료적 가치를 갖는 일기형식의 문학의 한 예다. 국내 작가의 대표적인 일기로는 근대는 윤치호, 현대는 김성칠의 것을 꼽을 수 있다. 자서전과 회고록은 삶에 대한 기록을 남기려는 의식의 산물로 아우구스티누스의 『고백록』을 예로 들 수 있다. 혜경궁 홍씨의 『한중록』, 김구의 『백범일지』와 같은 작품이 있다. 간디의 자서전은 세계적 베스트셀러가 되었다. 옥중기라는 특이한 장르도 있다. 오스카 와일드, 루이제 린저, 김광섭, 심영복 등이 옥중기를 집필했다. 세계 3대 종교의 경전을 논픽션으로 보는 시각도 존재한다. 이를 통해 우리는 논픽션의 유구한 역사와 영향력을 짐작해 볼 수 있다. 이 땅에서도 앞으로 논픽션에 대한 편견과 평가절하가 사라져 다양한 문학을 포용할 수 있게 되는 날이 오기를 바란다.

영문 초록

Fiction is a story of fabrication, whereas non-fiction is a work based upon the truth that is not created. Therefore, it is interesting to discuss the point at which fiction and fact (non-fiction) are separated and distinguished. For example, we can first mention Arirang , a documentary literature and reportage, written by Nym Wales; in Korea, there is Dong-Woo Yu’s autobiography called The Cry of a Stone , Beyond Death and Beyond the Darkness of Times by Suk-Young Hwang, Operation Order Splendid Vacation by reporter Jae-Geol Yoon, etc. Additionally, travel essays or travelogues that document expeditions and travels, such as Marco Polo’s The Travels of Marco Polo , also fall into the non-fiction category. A representative work from Korea would be Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Kingdoms of India written by Hye-Cho. Modern books of travel include Traveler’s Account of the Soviet Union by Tae-Joon Lee, Traveler’s Account of the Coast by Tae-Joon Kim, and No-Ma-Man-Ri by Sa-Ryang Kim. Works in the form of biographies or critical biographies can be seen as a branch of history beyond the category of a personal story. For instance, examples include the Gospel of Jesus, Socrates, and the heroic tales of Plutarchos. Furthermore, Oriental biographical literature can be represented by Sima Qian’s Historic Chronicles (史記), while among the Korean biographies, The Critical Biography of Dong-Ju Yoon is considered excellent work. Of course, a diary can also be great non-fiction as an autobiographical record. Works like Admiral Sun-Shin Yi’s Nanjung-Ilgi are pieces of literature in the form of a diary with essential material value in social and political history. As for diaries of modern times in Korea, the diary of Chi-Ho Yun is mentionable, and of the present-day there is Seong-Chil Kim’s diary. Autobiographies and memories are the products of efforts to leave records of life, like Les Confessions of Augustinus, Memoirs of Lady Hyegyeong by Crown Princess Hong, and Baekbeomilji by Kim-Gu. In addition, Gandhi’s autobiography became a word-class bestseller. There is also a unique genre for diaries written in prison: Oscar Wilde, Louise Rinser, Gwang-Sup Kim, Yeong-Bok Shim, etc. are writers of such genre. We must also notice that some view the scriptures of the world’s three major religions as non-fiction. Overall, we can comprehend the long history and influence that non-fiction has brought to us. Thus, we can only hope that the prejudice and devaluation against non-fiction work will be demolished in order to embrace diverse types of literature.
