문화융합의 도구로써의 관용의 효용에 대한 철학적 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 문화를 구성하는 다양한 구성요소들의 집합인 문화 간의 충돌의 상황에서 관용의 효용에 대한 고찰을 시도한다. 이를 위해 논자는 문화를 구성하는 다양한 종교적, 철학적, 도덕적 요소들의 차이가 문화 간의 충돌의 전제조건이 된다는 일반적인 상식에서부터 출발하여, 이 충돌의 요소들을 오히려 역전하여 평화와 공존의 전제 조건으로 간주하는 관용의 효용을 몇 가지 과정을 통해 논증하였다. 이 과정은 크게 두 가지 단계를 거쳤다. 첫째, 관용의 정의를 통해 관용이 문화 충돌의 조건이라 여겨지는 상이한 문화적 요소들이 어떻게 문화들 간의 상호 관용의 전제 조건이 되는가를 보이고자 시도하였다. 이 과정을 통해 논자 문화 간의 충돌이라는 비극적인 상황의 조건이 되는 문화 간의 차이라는 현실에 관용이 얼마나 효율적인 도구가 되는지를 보이고자 하였다. 둘째로, 상이한 요소들의 집합체로서의 문화가 어떠한 맥락에서 상호 관용의 관계로 진입할 수 있는가를 두 가지 관용의 모델들을 통해 고찰해 보았다. 이 두 가지 관용의 모델들은 종교적 관용의 모델과 정치적 관용의 모델이다. 종교적, 정치적 관용의 모델을 제시한 이유는 문화 충돌이라는 현실이 충돌하는 문화들의 요소에 따라 그 성격을 달리하며, 그로인해 다양한 해법을 요구한다는 사실 때문이다. 즉, 문화 충돌이라는 상황에서 유용하게 활용될 수 있는 관용의 효율을 증대시키기 위해서는 관용의 다양한 모델을 확보하는 것이 매우 중요한 것이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

There are various components consisting up culture. Religious beliefs, historical traits of political struggles against enemies, political ideology, sets of moral rules, etc., can be the components. And specific culture produces the specific normative rules for the people who live in the culture as the result of the mixture of those components. Historical changes in the religious way of living, geographical change, the moral doctrines produced or imported from other nation, etc. are idiosyncratic of the culture. In this sense, it is quite obvious that the presence of plural cultures illustrates the presence of plural normative rules for specific people. And the presence of plural normative rules for peoples instructing how to live, what is the correct way to worship god or gods, what is the good and bad, etc., foresees the conflicts between various normative rules. It is due to the fact that the presence of ‘differences’ between rules seem to demand to resolve the differences. Thus, as the representative of normative rules, culture implicitly includes the danger of destructive confrontation of cultures. In this article, I will try to suggest the practice of toleration as a very effective tool for restraining the possible conflict between cultures. In order to defend that effectiveness, firstly, I will introduce the concept of toleration proving that the practice of toleration treats the presence of ‘differences’ between cultures as the necessary condition for toleration, not as the thing needed to be resolved. Secondly, I will try to suggest several distinguished models for toleration with the hope to enhance and expand the utility of toleration in various situation.
