국문 초록

본 연구에서는 미국에서 활발하게 운영되고 있는 독서진흥 프로그램들의 특성을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 첫째, 미국은 지역사회 기반의 독서운동이 잘 구축, 운영되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 미국의 독서진흥 프로그램들은 다양한 주체들의 협력으로 운영되고 있었다. 셋째, 수용자의 미디어 이용행태를 고려한 독서진흥 프로그램을 운영하고 있었다. 넷째, 학생들의 독서습관 형성을 위한 프로그램을 운영하고 있었다. 종합적으로 미국은 ‘자연스럽게 책을 가깝게 하는 독서 환경 조성’, 그리고 ‘지역사회 중심의 자발적 자치 운동’을 통한 독서진흥을 권장하는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 나눔의 분석모델로 살펴보면, 독서진흥 프로그램의 수여자는 주로 공공기관과 비영리 조직, 사회단체였고, 수혜자는 사회 전체의 구성원들이다. 독서진흥 프로그램들은 독서를 통해 개인의 발전은 물론 사회 발전을 도모하는 공익적 경영전략을 추구하고, 도서관 건립기금 제공, 장서 확충 등과 같은 직접지원 방식과 토론 교육, 독서활동 독려 등을 통한 간접지원 방식을 사용하는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study examined the characteristics of reading promotion programs actively operated in the USA. Through the research, I found that there is well established and operated community-based reading movement. Most of the programs manage in cooperation with diverse bodies, and one is for the young generation being familiar with images and games. Also, some reading programs exist to help students build reading habits. Overall, reading promotion programs in the USA focus on “creating a reading environment” and “community-driven movement.” Based on the model of sharing, the granters of the reading promotion programs are mainly public institutions, non-profit, or social organizations. Also, the recipients are all members of the whole society. All programs pursue a public interest that promotes personal and social development via reading. Lastly, for reading promotion, not only indirect support such as debate education and reading activities but also direct support such as funding for library construction and expansion of collections are used.
