존 던(John Donne)의 연애시에 담긴 시대적 변화와 다양한 여성상의 공존

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 존 던의 초기 연애시인 Songs and Sonnets와 Elegies에 함께 어울려 공존하고 있는 다양한 여성들의 모습을 살펴보고, 이를 던이 살았던 16세기 말, 17세기 초의 영국의 가부장적 담론과 과도기적 시대 변화에 비추어 분석하고자 함이다. 던의 연애시에서 여성은 수동적이고 복종적이거나, 그로테스크하고 혐오스러우며, 때로는 동시대의 남성들과 동등한 지위에 서있는 다양한 모습으로 그려지고 있다. 던의 작품에 담긴 다양한 여성상의 공존은 16세기 말, 17세기 초의 영국에 팽배했던 가부장제 이데올로기와 정치적, 경제적, 사회적, 그리고 종교적 면에서의 시대의 큰 변화들과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있다. 남성의 여성 지배와 여성의 복종이라는 힘의 역학 관계를 기반으로 하는 가부장제는 던의 연애시에서 침묵되어진 채 상대남성에게 순종하는 억압된 존재로, 때로는 남성의 성적 욕구의 대상물로만 간주되기도 하는 대부분의 여성들의 모습에 담겨있다. 그러나 17세기에 들어선 이후, 가부장제는 정치, 경제, 종교적인 과도기적 시대 변화에 따른 한계와 모순, 그리고 담론의 붕괴의 가능성을 드러내었고, 이는 남성들에게 위협감과 두려움을 가져 왔다. 던은 이러한 시대적 변화에 따른 남성의 불안감을 인지하고 이를 여성 혐오와 비하를 통해 남성 중심적 위계질서를 더욱 공고히 하고자 하는 작품 속 남성인물들의 모습에 투영하고 있다. 또한 던은 이에 그치지 않고, 각각 동등한 주체로서 존재하는 여성과 남성의 이상적인 “완전한 합일”의 사랑의 관계를 제안한다. 결국 던의 연애시에는 여러 시대적 사회의 변화들에 대한 시인의 인식과 깊은 통찰력을 통해 반영된 다양한 여성상들이 공존하고, 더 나아가 완전한 합일의 사랑이라는 남녀 관계의 새로운 패러다임이 제시되어 있다. 이러한 점이 바로 17세기 영시의 거장이라 불리는 던의 위대함일 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore various female characters coexisting in Donne’s early love poems, Songs and Sonnets and Elegies. It examines this coexistence of different female characters in the light of the changes of the time when Donne lived in England. In his love poems, most women appears to be passive and obedient, or to be grotesque and loathed. However, some women also seem to have the equal status as that of man. Diverse views of woman in Donne’s poems are closely related with the patriarchal ideology and great changes in the political, economical, and religious spheres of England in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The patriarchism is revealed through the power relationship between man and woman in Donne’s poems. Most female characters exist as suppressed beings who obey male characters. They are also regarded as the objects only for man’s sexual purpose. In the early seventeenth century, however, the patriarchal ideology faced with its limits and contradictions by considerable social changes. The possibility of male-centered society’s breakdown caused men to feel anxiety and fear. Donne expresses these anxieties of threatened men in the form of the hatred and disparagement for women in his love poems. Donne also goes on to grope for the possibility of an ideal relationship between man and woman in which both stand as equal subjects in “perfect unity” instead of merely criticizing contractions of the patriarchism. We can find out his greatness in the awareness of the changes of his time, the reflection of it in his works with profound insight, and finally his suggestion for new paradigm for an ideal relationship between man and woman.
