국문 초록

이 글은 디아스포라를 소재로 한 20세기 전반기 대중가요를 중심으로 그 양상과 의미를 살펴본 것이다. 디아스포라를 소재로 한 대중가요의 전반적인 특징으로는 ‘가사와 음악의 부조화’와 ‘이동과 경계의 강조’를 들 수 있다. 디아스포라와 연관된 노래 중에는 슬픈 가사가 빠른 템포와 어우러진 예가 많았는데, 이는 기차와 썰매와 같이 이동 수단을 제재로 한 노래에서 주로 나타나는 특징이다. 기차와 썰매라는 운송 수단의 속도감을 강조하면서 이러한 가사와 음악의 부조화 현상이 일어났다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 디아스포라 관련 노래에 국경이 자주 등장하는 것은 국경이 고국과 타국을 나누는 운명의 경계선이었기 때문이다. 디아스포라를 나타낸 노래는 크게 ‘이동 중의 만감’과 ‘정착 중의 감상’으로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있었다. 디아스포라 관련 노래 중에는 기차와 썰매를 타고 이동하는 화자의 만감을 표출한 노래가 많았다. 기차를 타고 이동하는 화자가 주로 과거를 회상하는 것에 집착했다면 썰매를 타고 이동 중인 화자는 현재의 심경과 미래에 대한 전망을 토로했다. 그러나 모두 공통적으로 고국을 떠나는 화자의 비애감을 표출했다. 마지막으로 정착 중의 감상을 드러낸 노래에서는 여전히 정착하지 못한 채, 타국을 떠도는 나그네 신세의 비애와 슬픔을 표현한 노래가 많았다. 고국을 떠나 타국으로 간 우리 민족들은 대부분 여전히 경계인이면서 주변인으로 지난한 삶을 살아야 했던 것이다. 디아스포라를 소재로 한 노래는 일제시대의 특수한 역사적 상황을 반영하는 노래로 한국 대중가요사(大衆歌謠史)에서도 매우 독특한 위치를 차지한다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 노래들을 통해 당시 한인 이주의 감춰진 역사를 추적해 볼 수 있다는 점에서도 그 중요성을 강조할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the aspects and meaning of popular songs from the first half of the 20th century that deal with the subject of the Korean diaspora. General characteristics of these diaspora popular songs are “the incongruity of lyrics and music” and “the emphasis on movement and borders.” There are many examples of songs related to the diaspora that have sad lyrics set to upbeat melodies, and this characteristic usually appears in those songs that deal with the subject of transportation methods such as trains or sleighs. This incongruity of the lyrics and music can be seen as arising from the emphasis on the feeling of speed inherent in modes of transportation such as trains and sleighs. Also, the frequent appearance of national borders in songs dealing with the diaspora is due to the fact that national borders where the boundaries of fate that separated the homeland from a foreign land. Songs that sing of the diaspora can be roughly divided into those that express “the flood of emotion while moving” and those that express the “sentiments of settling down.” Many songs dealing with the diaspora express the singer’s flood of emotions while moving by train or sleigh. While singers on trains are generally lost in reminiscence, singers moving by sleigh express their feelings at that moment and their outlook on the future. Yet one thing they share is that they all basically expressed the sorrow of the singer upon leaving his or her homeland, a sorrow at odds with the upbeat melodies. Finally, many of the songs that reveal the sentiments of settling down sing of the grief and sorrow of a wanderer adrift in a foreign land, still unable to find their place. Most Koreans who left their homeland and went to foreign lands lived difficult lives as marginal figures. Songs that dealt with the diaspora reflect the unique historical situation of the Japanese colonial period and occupy a very special place in the history of Korean popular songs. Their importance can also be seen in that they allow us to trace the hidden history of Korean migration at the time.
