국문 초록

2017년 4월에 출판된 옌거링(嚴歌苓)의 《방화(芳華)》는 문화대혁명을 배경으로 한 소설로, 많은 부분 옌거링 자신이 경험했던 이야기를 바탕으로 하여 서술되었다. 《방화》는 샤오쑤이쯔(蕭穗子)의 1인칭 시선으로 30여 년 전 문화대혁명시기 문예공작단에 속해있던 젊은 이들이 격변하는 시대 속에서 겼었던 사랑과 역경을 그린 작품이다. 특히 주인공인 류펑(劉峰)과 허샤오만(何小曼)은 소설 속에서 각각 기억과 망각을 대변하고 있는데, 이러한 요소들은 문화대혁명이라는 역사적 사건과 한데 어우러져 독특한 맥락을 지니게 된다. 여기에 옌거링 특유의 서술기법이 더해지면서 독자들은 자신의 추억을 점검해보고 그 기억 속 자기자신의 역사적 책임을 물어보게 된다. 이에 본고는 ‘기억’과 ‘망각’을 키워드로 하여 옌거링이 문혁을 회고하고 서술하는 방식에 대하여 고찰해보고자 한다. 특히 1인칭의 시점으로 서술된 《방화》의 서술 기법에 집중하는 한편, 기억과 망각을 통해 인물들이 구성되는 방식을 중점으로 하여 저자가 소설을 통해 독자들에게 전달하고자 하는 바를 추적해 본다.

영문 초록

Yan Geling’s Youth, published in April, 2017, is a novel which depicts events which occurred during the Cultural Revolution, it is based on stories that Yan Geling herself had experienced. Youth is written in Xiao Suizi’s first-person narrative, and depicts the love and conflict of a young soldiers who were members of the Literary Arts Group of the Cultural Revolution 30 years ago. In particular, the heroines Liu Feng and Hou Xiaoman represent the memory and oblivion, respectively, and these elements have a unique context in harmony with the historical events of the Cultural Revolution. As Yan Geling’s unique narrative technique is added to it, readers look back to their memories and ask for their own historical responsibilities in them. Through analysis, this paper aims to examine how Yan Geling recalls and describes Cultural Revolution with the keywords ‘memory’ and ‘oblivion’. To further extent, this paper explores the narrative technique of Youth described in the first person perspective, and trace what the author wants to convey to the readers through the novel focusing on the way in which the characters are composed through memory and oblivion.
