에도시대의 고증수필 고증수필의 의미와 상품성을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 에도시대에 고증이라는 지적, 학문적 작업을 통해 탄생한 고증수필에 대하여 그 특징과 양상을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 에도시대에 본격적으로 등장한 고증수필을 그 내용에 기반 하여 ｢학문에 관한 고증수필｣, ｢예능, 놀이에 대한 고증수필｣, ｢에도 중심의 지역풍속에 대한 고증수필｣, ｢중국과 일본을 비교한 고증수필｣의 네 항목으로 분류하였다. 산토 교덴, 교쿠테이 바킨과 같은 에도시대 후기 대중 작가들이 집필한 고증수필은 상품성을 가진 서적으로 인식되었다. 풍속과 항담 등을 주로 고증한 그들의 고증수필은 작품 구상과 창작의 중심을 이루기도 한다. 즉 대중 작가들의 ｢창작을 위한 고증｣이 활발하게 이루어졌다. 그들의 고증 취미는 ｢고증만을 목적으로 한 고증수필｣의 집필로 이어지며 상품으로 유 통, 소비되며, 대중 독자들에게 오락적 성격의 서적과 같은 흥미와 재미를 주고 있다. 또한 개인의 고증이 아닌 문인 그룹에 의한 공동의 고증 작업을 통하여 고증 대상과 고증에 대한 신뢰도를 높이는 공동체의 지적 작업으로까지 확대되고 있다. 이처럼 본 논문에서는 에도시대 고증수필로 평가받아 온 작품들의 개략적 내용을 정리, 분류하여 고증수필의 성격과 양상에 대하여 고찰하였다. 고증수필이라는 장르에 대한 정확한 개념정립이 이루어지지 않은 상황에서 고증수필의 전체적인 특징과 그 의미부터 살펴보았다. 유학자, 국학자와 같은 전문 지식인이 쓴 고증수필이 아닌 당시 게사쿠와 같은 대중적 읽 을거리를 주로 집필했던 대중 작가들의 고증수필을 연구 대상으로 하여, 대중 소설과 고증수필과의 관계, 고증을 통한 소설의 창작, 지적활동인 고증을 위한 고증 등에 대하여 그 의미를찾고자 시도하였다. 또한 당시 서적의 간기를 통하여 고증수필에 대한 광고의 양상과 선전방법에 대하여도 논하였다.

영문 초록

In the late Edo period, writers created novels with a strong entertainment component with genres designed to show their intellectual ability and to satisfy intellectual curiosity through verification essays for the public. The verification essay, which was mainly about professional knowledge and learning, began to have value as a product that aroused readers’ interest, such as popular books that were distributed and consumed at the time. Unlike previous academic content, popular writers have devoted their efforts to strange rumors, legends, or phenomena that were circulating in the past. At that time, readers were interested in new stories, objects, legends, and rumors that stimulated fun and curiosity even if they lacked expertise, and the verification essays were recognized as books with recreational characteristics, not only for intellectual consumption. By the modern era, verification essays were actively written by Confucian scholars and nationalists. The contents included various records of nature, history, society, and culture, and reports, criticism, speculation, and evidence. The essays began to be widely introduced to the public beyond an intellectual individual’s desire for knowledge and intellectual ability. At that time, essays of popular writers were circulated and consumed like popular novels. Among these essays, the essays containing the criticism, examination, and ideas of the author were promoted with the novels at that time and attracted many readers. This study first examines the characteristics and aspects of the essays by examin-ing the outlines of the works that have been evaluated as essays in the Edo period. With the essays of popular writers as the subject, the relationship between popular novels and essays, the creation of novels through the essays, and essays are explored. Also, advertisements and propaganda of the high proof essay through the book’s publication about the profitability and propaganda of the high proof essay are discussed.
