국문 초록

호남지역에는 우리 선조들의 문화공간이었던 누정이 많이 남아있다. 광주·전남지역에는 현재 630여 곳 이상이 남아있으며, 그동안 사라진 것까지 합쳐보면 2500여 곳에 이르는 누정이 세워졌다. 그중에서 근대기에 건립된 누정은 전체 누정수의 3분의 1이 넘는다. 이처럼 근대기는 호남 누정문화를 자리매김 할 수 있는 중요한 시기인데도 그동안 역사가 오래지 않았다거나 잘 알려진 인물이 지은 경우가 아니었다는 이유 등으로 관심을 받지 못하였다. 그래서 건립연대도 오래지 않은 대부분의 누정들이 이름도 알려지지 않은 채 역사의 뒤안길로 사라져 버렸다. 누정은 많은 사람들의 시적 교유 현장임과 동시에 그 사회를 이끄는 담론이 형성되었던 곳이기도 하고, 후학을 양성하는 강학공간이기도 하였다. 이러한 문화는 근대기에 이르러 갑자기 생겨난 것이 아니라 멀리 고려시대부터 생겨났으며 조선시대에 발전해서 지금까지도 이어져오고 있는 문화의 큰 맥이다. 이와 같은 근대기 누정문화의 현황을 파악하는 일은 근대 호남문화의 특징을 구명하는 일이기도 하다. 때문에 우리들은 자료가 사라지기전에 특별한 관심을 가지고서 훌륭한 문화유산이 더 이상 유실되는 것을 막도록 해야 할 것이다. 그런데 다행스럽게도 아직까지는 이 시기에 건립된 누정이나 개인 문집이 많이 남아있어서 전체적인 파악이 용이한 편이다. 근대기 누정의 전체 현황파악을 통해 그동안 알려지지 않았던 주요 누정작가들과 주요 누정들을 밝힐 수 있게 되었다. 누정을 중심으로 주로 어떤 활동들이 있었는가를 밝힐 수도 있다. 또한 누정시문을 통해서 우리 선조들이 누정이라는 자연 공간에서 어떻게 자신을 수양하고 주변 사람들과 관계를 맺으며 문화 활동을 해왔는지를 살필 수 있다. 근대기에는 많은 사람들이 누정 건립 활동을 하였고, 또 대다수의 인물들이 누정시문의 창작에 참여했다. 그런데 이러한 점은 누정의 건립 목적이 전대에 비해 자신의 인맥을 자랑하고 가문의 위세를 드높이고자한 의도도 내포되었기 때문으로 보인다. 이는 근대기에 나타나는 특이한 문화현상으로 보아야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

In Honam area, there remain many Nujeong which were cultural institutions of our ancestors. There remain 630 Nujeong or more in Gwangju and Chonnam province at the present time, and adding Nujeong disappeared till now, about 2500 Nujeong has been built in this area. Among those, the number of Nujeong built at the modern age is over a third part of total Nujeong numbers. The modern age, like this, was an important period for Honam Nujeong culture to be stable; nevertheless, there has been no interest about it because of several reasons: that is, its history is not long and a person building Nujeong was not famous, etc.. Then, most of Nuejong that building date is not long has been disappeared to the back of history without being known its name. A Nujeong was a place for many people to associate each other with a poetry, for a conversation leading a society to be made, and also to cultivate younger students. The culture like this was not suddenly happened at the modern age but originated from Goryeo dynasty and developed in Choseon dynasty and has been continued to now as cultural spirit. To understand the present state of a modern Nujeong culture, like above, is also to investigate a character of Honam culture. We must, hence, prevent our excellent legacy of culture from being lost with a special concern before it disappears. However, a large number of a modern Nujeong and a collection of individual works remain fortunately up to now and it is not difficult to understand totally those. It become possible to make clear principal Nujeong writers and major Nujeong with understanding totally the present state of modern Nujeong. At the same time, it was possible to investigate by studying a Nujeong poem how our ancestors had self-discipline and associated with neighbors and has been doing cultural activities in a natural space of a Nujeong. Many people built a Nujeong and most of a talented man took part in writing Nujeong poetry and prose in the modern age. But, the reason for them to act like this may be to pride themselves on personal relationships and to raise a power of their families. This is different from the previous generation in the meaning of a building intention, and must be said to be unique phenomena of culture in the modern age.
