A New Six-rowed and Covered Barley Cultivar, “Dahyang” with Lodging Resistance, High-Yield and Good Quality

영문 초록

Dahyang, a new six-rowed and covered barley cultivar, was developed from the cross between “Milyang26// (Bera-Olbori/Hobhisee-Buheung)/Ben-gi” and “Samcheok 86-226” by the Honam Agricultural Research Institute(HARI), NICS, RDA in 2005. Among the crosses made in 1994, a promising line that showed both high yield and lodging resistance in the Yield Trial tested at Suwon in 2002, was designated as Suwon 393. It performed good in the Regional Yield Trials (RYT) tested at five locations in Korea for three years from 2003 to 2005, and was released as the name of Dahyang. It pertain to the growth habit of Ⅲ and has characteristics of erect plant type, green leaf and stem that was similar to the check cultivar Olbori, and compact spikes with long rough awns. Its heading date was April 27 in upland, and April 20 in paddy field conditions. Maturing time was May 31 and May 22, which were two and one days earlier than that of Olbori, respectively. The new cultivar Dahyang had 85 cm of culm length and 4.1 cm of spike length. It showed 676 spikes per m², 51 grains per spike, 32 g of 1,000-grain weight, and 669 g of test weight. Dahyang showed weaker winter hardiness, but better lodging tolerance and BaYMV(Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus) resistance than those of the check cultivar, Olbori. Seed storage protein content, β-glucan contents and pearled grain rate showed similar to check cultivar, Olbori. But it showed higher sensory score for barley tea than that of check cultivar. Average yield of the pearled grain in the regional yield trial was 4.64 MT/㏊ in upland and 4.46 MT/㏊ in paddy field, which was 14% and 16% higher than those of the check cultivar Olbori, respectively. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum temperature of -8℃ in January in Korean peninsula.
