A New High Quality Rice Cultivar, “Manweolbyeo” Adaptable to Extremely Late Season Cultivation

영문 초록

A new rice variety “Manweolbyeo” is a japonica type developed by the rice breeding team of Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, National Institute of Crop Science, and released in 2002. It was selected in an extremely late season cultivation condition from the progenies of a single cross of Milyang120/Hwayeongbyeo. The selected line(YR16326-8-3-2) from the progenies of it cross was designated Milyang173 in 1998. When the “Manweolbyeo” was planted on July 10 for the local adaptability yield trials, the average yield of “Manweolbyeo” during last three years was 4.96 ton/ha for milled rice, which was significantly higher than Keumobyeo’s. Milled rice kernels is translucent with slight white belly. “Manweolbyeo” is resistant to bacterial blight, moderately resistant to blast and stripe virus, but susceptible to insect pests. The characteristic of heading times of it was accelerated in second cropping season at Milyang as a result of exposure to short-day condition during growth, but was delayed in the first cropping season of which belongs to long-day condition. And the variety did not show a premature heading on the cultivation condition of July 10 transplanting with 50-day-old seedling. Therefore, it would be suitable for the second crop followed by cash crop cultivation in the double cropping system at southern part of Korean peninsula.
