‘1907년 평양대부흥운동’에 대한 비판적 고찰 - 회개ㆍ영성ㆍ부흥의 문제를 중심하여

국문 초록

  ‘1907년 대부흥운동’ 100주년을 맞이하여 그동안 노선을 달리해 온 보수와 진보 진영의 한국 교회와 신학계가 함께 학술 심포지엄을 열고, 다양한 행사를 벌이고 있다. 보수 진영이 ‘1907년 대부흥운동’을 ‘한국 교회가 돌아가야 할 원형’, 혹은 ‘신앙운동의 모범’으로 주장하는 반면, 진보 진영은 ‘1907년 대부흥운동’이 일제 치하 교인들의 항일 투쟁을 잠재우고 오늘날 한국 교회의 신앙을 몰역사적인 것으로 만들었다고 비판한다. 이러한 차이는 어디에서 비롯된 것일까? 이것은 선교사들이 가르친 정교분리, 죄담론과 회개, 영성, 부흥에 대한 양 진영의 신학적 이해가 상반되기 때문이다.
  그 때문에 이 논문은 서구 선교사들의 관점이 아닌 일제 치하에서 고난 받는 조선 민중, 여성의 눈으로 ‘1907년 평양대부흥’의 역사적 배경과 성격을 재조명하고, 당시 선교사들이 가르친 신학담론들을 억압받는 자들을 해방시키는 예수 그리스도의 복음의 빛에 비추어 역사비판학적 방법으로 고찰한다. 그리하여 진보와 보수 진영의 한국 교회와 신학계가 오늘의 역사적 정황에서 어떠한 방향으로 함께 연합하여, 민족과 교회를 살릴 것인가를 모색한다.

영문 초록

  Celebrating the centennial anniversary of "The Pyeongyang Revival in 1907", the churches and theological world in Korea that have been divided into the conservative camp and the progressive camp are jointly hosting a scholarly symposium and various events. The conservative camp insists that "The Pyeongyang Revival in 1907" be (formally) accepted as "the original form of church in Korea" or "a model of Revivalism". On the other hand, the progressive camp asserts that "The Pyeongyang Revival in 1907" be criticized in that it quieted the anti-Japanese struggle of the church members under Japanese colonialization and has turned the faith of Korean churches into non-historical one today. Where does the difference between the conservative and the progressive view come from? It originates from the antithetic theological understanding about separation of church and state, sin and repentance, spirituality, revival which missionaries had adopted.
  This article reanalyzes the background and characteristics of "the Revival in 1907" from the perspective of the Korean people oppressed under Japanese colonialization; particularly of women, and not of western missionaries. By adopting an historical critical method, it also critically reviews the theological discourses that the missionaries had taught at the time of 1907 in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as delivery for the oppressed. In conclusion, this paper shows the way how both the conservative and the progressive camps of churches and of the theological world could revive the unity of the Korean people and their churches in today" s historical circumstances.
