국문 초록

독일 급진 경건주의자들은 필립 스페너와 테오도어 운터아익 혹은 그들의 제자들을 통해 각성된 후 타락하고 거짓된 교회에 반대하며 보다 급진적인 길을 추구하였던 자들이다. 이들은 중생 없는 칭의는 허구일 뿐이며, 마틴 루터에 의해 시작된 교리의 개혁은 체험적이고 실천적인 신학에 의해 생활의 개혁으로 완성되어야 한다고 믿었다. 독일 급진 경건주의가 감리교의 아버지 존 웨슬리에게 끼친 영향은 컸다. 고트프리드 아놀드와 게하르트 테어스테겐 같은 급진 경건주의자들은 특히 그들의 찬송가를 통해 웨슬리에게 점진주의 성화관과 그리스도 안에서의 변화시키는 믿음과 변화된 삶에 대해 가르쳐 주었다. 이 연구는 현존하는 문헌을 통해 독일 급진 경건주의자들과 웨슬리의 관계를 추적하고, 이들이 웨슬리의 신학과 실천에 미친 영향이 구체적으로 무엇이었는지를 밝히고 있다.

영문 초록

German radical Pietists refer to those who were awakened through Phillip Spener, Theodor Untereyck, or their pupils and later pursued a more radical course seeing themselves as opposing to the fallen and false church. The German radical Pietists exerted a significant influence on John Wesley’s theology and piety. The German Pietists generally emphasized that righteousness of Christ is first imputed to the believer, but is then to become progressively imparted through the indwelling Spirit of God. Wesley’s stress on sanctification in soteriology was primarily derived from the German Pietists. Wesley was awakened to the true meaning of saving faith through the German Pietists who showed him that faith is something living that transfigures all events of life. For this awakening his discovery of the hymns of the German radical Pietists, Gottfried Arnold and Gerhard Tersteegen, served as an active force in leading him toward transforming faith and transformed life. Searching specific evidence in primary sources, this study identifies the influences of the German radical Pietists on Wesley and the relationship between them.
