다문화, 다인종 사회에서의 정체성 문제

국문 초록

오늘날 우리는 다문화, 다인종 시대에 살아가고 있다. 대한민국이라는 한 장소에서 다양한 문화와 언어, 피부색깔을 가진 사람들이 함께 살아가고 있다. 이러한 까닭에 다문화, 다인종 시대에 신학과 기독교윤리가 다루어야 할 대표적인 과제가 “어떻게 타자와 함께 살아갈 것인가?”이다. 이 문제를 다룰 때에, 핵심적인 문제가 바로 “정체성”의 문제이다. 왜냐하면 다양한 타자가 함께 살아가는 다문화, 다인종 사회에서 과거와 같은 단일한 정체성이 아니라, 복잡한 정체성을 가질 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 이러한 관점에서 볼 때, 한국인의 고유한 정체성을 형성해오는 데 기여한 “우리의식”은 다문화, 다인종 시대에는 심각한 도전을 받을 수밖에 없다고 보인다. 왜냐하면 한국인의 “우리의식”은 학연, 혈연, 지연 등의 같음에 기대는 “동일성으로의 정체성”을 강조함으로써, 타자에 대한 배타의 논리를 제공하기 때문이다. 이러한 문제의식으로부터 필자는 다문화, 다인종 시대에는 포스트콜로니얼 학자들이 제시하는 잡종 정체성이 인정되어야 한다고 본다. 필자는 디트리히 본회퍼가 말하는 폴리포니의 삶이 이러한 정체성 인식에 도움을 준다고 보면서, 그가 말하는 폴리포니의 삶을 분석한다. 본회퍼의 폴리포니는 분리될 수 없지만, 분명히 구별되는 삶의 세 가지 동시성을 이야기한다: 하나님과 세계, 한 개인 안에서의 축복과 고통, 그리고 자아와 타자. 이러한 본회퍼의 폴리포니는 타자와 함께 살기 위하여, 다양한 목소리를 지닌 타자의 타자성을 환대할 준비가 되어 있어야 한다는 것을 알려준다. 그리고 이러한 타자성에 열려 있으려면, 포스트콜로니얼 학자들이 지적하는 바와 같이 우리 자신에게 내재하는 상이하고 혼합적이며 다차원적인 삶과 정체성을 의식해야 한다. 필자는 이러한 타자성과 다양성에 대하여 열려있는 통찰이 같음의 정체성을 요구하는 우리의식에 대하여 대안적 삶을 제시할 수 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

One of the central issues in contemporary theology and Christian ethics is "how to live together with others?" The question of identity is at the center of this critical issue because we live in a multi-cultural and multi-racial society where people of diverse cultures and colors live together in a same place. This is true of Korean society. In this situation, the researcher suspects that Korean "we-consciousness" can be an apt ethos for today's world because Korean "woori" has brought about the homogeneous notion of identity based on the same blood, region, and school. Upon this idea, the researcher argues that we Koreans in this situation need a more complex and heterogeneous notion of identity for living together with others in the contemporary world. The researcher claims that Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s notion of a polyphonic life can be a helpful Christian ethos for Koreans to reflect critically on their identity based on "woori." In Letters and Papers from Prison, Bonhoeffer encourages us to live a polyphonic life where diverse voices and colors of life are brought together. In line with the Lutheran simul, Bonhoeffer's polyphonic life refers to threefold hybridized aspects of our life: God and the world, blessing and suffering within a personal life, and the self and others. The point is that without recognizing the dissimilar, hybridized, and heterogeneous diversity of our own self, we cannot welcome the dissimilarity, hybridity, and heterogeneity of others. The researcher concludes that Bonhoeffer’s suggestion for a hybrid, polyphonic life with differences challenges Koreans to rethink their socio-cultural ethos of woori and to consider seriously the issue of how they can live a more inclusive life with others in a complex world.
