국문 초록

2010년 말에서 2011 년 초, 거의 전국적으로 퍼진 구제역을 막기 위한 예방 조치로 3백만 마리가 넘는 소와 돼지가 살처분(殺處分)되었다. 이 참사는 그리스도인들에게 오늘날 성행하는 공장식 축산이 창조주 하느님의 피조물인 가축의 사육 방식으로 적절한지 의문을 제기한다. 이 글은 이 물음에 대한 신학적 응답의 노력이자, 그리스도인들이 인간과 동물의 관계에 대한 자신들의 암묵적인 이해를 검토해 보길 요청하는 초대이다. 이 글은 다음과 같이 구성된다. 첫째, 기존의 연구를 간략히 살펴보며 동물의 윤리적 담론에서 인간과 동물의 관계가 차지하는 의의를 지적한다. 둘째, 부버 (Martin Buber) 의 ‘나 - 너’ 와 나 - 그것’ 의 범주를 사용하여 인간과 동물의 관계를 고려한다. 올바른 인간과 동물의 관계는 ‘나 - 그것’과 ‘나 - 너 ’의 조화와 균형을 요구한다. 셋째, 성서에서 드러나는 인간과 동물의 관계를 검토한다. 성서적 관점에 따르면, 동물은 인간과 근원적 친화성과 유대를 지니고 또한 그 자체의 본질적 가치를 지니는 창조공동체의 구성원이다. 여기서는 특히, 그리스도인들이 공장식 축산과 직결된 현안인 육식을 어떻게 생각 할 수 있는지 검토한다. 끝으로, 이렇게 제시된 인간과 동물의 관계에 기초한 삶의 양식으로 절제와 검약을 제안한다. 절제와 검약의 태도로 동물을 대 할 때, 우리 는 우리의 필요를 충족하면서도 하느님 보시기에 좋은 창조공동체를 동물과 함께 형성하고 유지할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

From late 2010 to early 2011, more than three million cattle and pigs were slaughtered as a preventive measure to fight the foot-and-mouth disease which had spread throughout Korea. This tragic event raises to Christians the question of whether factory-style livestock farming, which has become popular these days, is a proper way of breeding livestock, which are creatures of God the creator. This essay is at once a theological response to this question and an invitation to Christians to review their implicit understanding of the relationship between humans and animals. This essay is composed as follows. First, I remark on the significance of the relationship of animals with human beings in establishing criteria for the moral consideration of animals, while reviewing the established research as well as difficulties with regard to ethical discourses about animals. Secondly, I consider the relationship of humans and animals in terms of the I-Thou' and 'I-It' relationships proposed by Martin Buber. Any proper relationship between the two will require harmony and balance between 'l-Thou' and 'I-It.' Thirdly, I consider the relationship between humans and animals as it may be revealed in the Scriptures. From the biblical perspective, animals are members of the community of creation and have both their own intrinsic value and a fundamental affinity and bond with humans. In particular, I examine how Christians can handle the meat diet, which is directly linked with factory-style livestock farming. In the end, I propose moderation and frugality as a way of living as based on the relationship between humans and animals suggested here. When we deal with animals with an attitude of moderation and frugality, we can form and sustain, together with animals, the community of creation which God saw good, while meeting our needs.
