국문 초록

서양 중세 묘지는 그리스도교들의 영적 공동체를 이끌어가는 현실적이고 구체적인 새로운 형태의 연결체이며 망자와 살아있는 자들을 끈끈하게 이어주는 기억의 장소였다. 교회 묘지에 매장된다는 사실은 사후 세계에 대한 안녕과 영혼 구원에 대한 확증이자 살아 있는 자들을 교회로 연결시킬 수 있는 현실적인 장치였다. 11-12세기를 거치면서 서양 중세 사회는 새로운 변화를 맞이한다. 서양 중세 안정기와 더불어 생활공간이 확장되기 시작하였고 교회 주변이나 묘지 부근으로 거주민들이 모여들고 정착을 시작했다. 뿐만 아니라 서양 중세 묘지는 살아있는 자들에게는 일상을 제공할 수 있는 공간이었으며 교회를 포함한 봉건 세속 영주와 기사들의 현실적인 관심의 대상이 되었다. 서양 중세 묘지가 지닌 세속 공권력이 침투할 수 없는 평화 공간에 대한 특권이자 보호 의무를 뜻하는 비호권(庇護權)은 정치적·종교적·사법적 영역에서 서양 중세인들의 삶을 지배하였다. 또한 서양 중세 묘지의 평화 공간은 살아 있는 자들에게는 경제 활동의 장소이자 축제와 소통의 공간이었다. 서양 중세 묘지의 평화 공간은 이렇듯 이중적인 성격을 지니게 되었다. 서양 중세 묘지의 평화 공간이 지닌 비호권과 살아 있는 자들의 일상이 특히 중세 부르고뉴 묘지에서 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 이것은 서양 중세 묘지의 또 다른 성격을 이해할 수 있는 중요한 배경이 된다. 본고에서는 서양 중세 묘지 중 특히 중세 부르고뉴 묘지의 비호권과 묘지 입구에 세워진 시장을 중심으로 서양 중세 묘지의 성격과 역할 그리고 그 역사적 의미를 재조명하고자 한다.

영문 초록

It is said that the western medieval cemetery was the place of memory not only leading devoutly the christian spiritual community but also linking intimately the ancestors and the descendants. To be buried in the ecclesiastical cemetery in middle age, it assured the spiritual relief for the dead after death. Certainly, it enabled the christian community to concentrate on the Church without a break. The medieval society met the remarkable change in the 11 th and 12 th centuries, it was called the medieval heyday. In this vibrant context, the space of life began to extend by the inhabitants who gathered around the cemetery and the church. So, they began to settle in the ecclesiastical space including the cemetery. With this change of life-style, the medieval cemetery became the interesting space to profit for the church, the feudal seigneurs and the knights as well as furnished the necessary opportunities to work for the people. It was sure that the medieval cemetery played an important role in the area of politics, religion and jurisdiction by the right of asylum against the secular power. Also, it was the peaceful space of the medieval cemetery where the economic activity grew up and the festival and the communication of people ran at same time. Finally, it is possible to say that the peaceful space of the medieval cemetery was a component for catching the characters of the medieval cemetery bearing its double meaning. In other words, there are the right of asylum and the daily life of people in the medieval, especially burgundy cemetery. In this article, it aims to reflect on the character, the role and the historical meaning of the medieval cemetery by focusing on the right of asylum and the open market in the medieval burgundy cemetery.
