영문 초록

Christopher Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta has been frequently used as a means of promoting anti-Semitism and racial discrimination since the 17th century. Even Hitler, in the 20 th century, intentionally put Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice on the stage several times to spread the hatred of the Jews. We do not know exactly what Marlowe intended, but everyone admits that this work has spread the aversion to the Jew. First, this paper will argue that the hatred toward the Jew in the Renaissance period was not based on confirmed and verified facts, but came from unfounded rumors that had been circulated since the Middle Ages. Second, I will focus on the fact that the Jewish Barabas, who was the target of the Christian attack, also reveals he was not a real practitioner of Jewish faith. What he thought was only his wealth, and he took revenge on those who had harassed him in a cruel way. Finally, it will be noted that the tactics mentioned in Machiavelli’s The Prince were the choice of Christians as well as Barabas. By analyzing these three facts, it will be revealed that there was no religious or logical rationality throughout his work.
