국문 초록

16세기에 절정기를 맞았던 폴란드는 18세기에 들어와 주변 삼대 강국인 프로이센, 오스트리아, 러시아에 의해 세 번에 걸쳐 국토가 분할되다 결국 패망하고 말았다. 이것이 저 유명한 폴란드 삼국 분할이다. 전성기 당시 폴란드의 영토는 한때 99만㎢에 이르며 유럽에서 러시아 다음으로 가장 커다란 영토를 보유한 적도 있었다. 하지만 18세기에 들어와 폴란드 자체 내분 으로 국력이 약해지는 동시에 인접국인 러시아와 오스트리아 그리고 프로 이센이 강국으로 자라나며 폴란드에 암운이 드리워지기 시작했다. 결국 1772년부터 시작되는 1차 분할이후 23년만인 1795년 3차 분할의 결과로, 폴란드는 123년간 유럽 지도에서 사라지는 비운의 주인공이 됐다. 폴란드가 패망한데에는 삼국 분할에 수동적이던 유럽 나머지 국가들도 일조했다. 유럽은 프로이센, 오스트리아, 러시아가 30여년에 걸쳐 폴란드를 분할하고 합병하는 일련의 조치를 그저 바라만보고 있었다.

영문 초록

Poland was the peak of it’s history in the 16th century, but in the 18th century it was destroyed three times by the surrounding three powers - Prussia, Austria and Russia. This is the famous Partitions of Poland. At the golden age, Poland’s territory was once 990,000㎢ and had the largest territory next to Russia in Europe. In the 18th century, however, the power of Poland became weaken due to the internal disruption and the neighboring countries such as Prussia, Austria and Russia grew into a powerful nation. As a result of the third division in 1795, which was 23 years after the first division in 1772, Poland has become the protagonist of the disappearance of vanishing from the European map for 123 years. The rest of Europe, which was passive in the Partitions of Poland, also contributed to Poland’s collapse. Europe was just staring at a series of measures to split and merge Poland over Prussia, Austria and Russia for more than three decades.
