국문 초록

본고의 목적은 여말선초에 주자학이 수용되는 정신적 계기를 살펴보려는 것이다. 이를 위해 고려 말 사장유학과 불교의 정신적 위기를 검토하고, 이 위기가 주자학의 수용과 논리적으로 어떻게 연관되어 있는지를 검토하고자 하였다. 여말선초의 사상적 전환에 대한 선행연구는 대체로 외재적 접근법을 취하였다. 즉, 주로 불교의 부패상과 정치사회적 위기를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 그러나 새로운 사상이 요청된 고려 사회 내부의 정신적 해체, 즉 새로운 사상 수용의 내면적 계기는 잘 해명되지 않았던 것으로 생각된다. 본고는 그 계기를 14세기 고려의 전통유학과 결사불교가 직면한 주체성 및 현 실성의 위기로부터 찾고자 하였다. 전통유학은 1170년 무신란 이후 현실적 유효성을 상실했을 뿐만 아니라, 내면의 절망을 극복할 새로운 주체성의 확립에도 실패했다. 결사불교는 수행의 전통이 약화되고 대중과의 접점을 상실한 전통불교를 혁신하고자 했다. 그러나 무신집권의 정치현실을 극복하지 못했을 뿐 아니라, 일상 속에서 불교적 주체성을 수립하는 데 어려 움을 겪었다. 그 결과 현실의 변혁과 함께, 일상 속에서 도덕적 주체성을 확립하고자 했던 주자학 운동이 시작되었다.

영문 초록

This paper intends to examine the spiritual motives which the late Koryo society accepted new Confucianism as Weltanschauung. Specifically, it will review the crises of literature Confucianism and Buddhism in the late Koryo Dynasty and analysis how these crises were correlated with acceptance of new Confucianism internally. Generally, a external approach is common in existing studies about Weltanschauung transition of late Koryo and early Joseon Dynasty. For the most part, these investigate the decay of Buddhism and socio-political crises. But, there were little study about mental deconstruction which required a new world view, as it were, internal motive to accept a new philosophy. This paper intends to find out the crisis of subjectivity and reality with which the traditional Confucianism and reformative Buddhism were faced in 14th century. The Koryo’s traditional Confucianism lost the social effectiveness and failed to build a new subjectivity to overcome mental desperation too. Reformative Buddhism would like to change corrupt Buddhism which weakened religious training and lost the relationship with common people. But, it did not the political reality of military ruling and had difficulty in building Buddhist subjectivity in everyday life. As a result, new Confucianism was started as an alternative not only to reform the society but also to construct a moral subjectivity in the everyday life.
