국문 초록

본고는 먼저 민족 정체성이 서사적으로 규정된다는 점을 밝히고자 한다. 서사는 내부와 외부로부터 비판에 항상 노출되며, 따라서 민족 정체성은 과거의 행적만이 아니라 현재의 정치적 실천에 의해서도 구성된다. 다음으로는 한민족 예외주의를 비판한다. 한민족 예외주의는 민족 내부의 서사에 대해 외부적 비판의 여지를 원천적으로 봉쇄하려는 배타성을 대변하며, 나아가 내부적 비판에 대해서도 귀를 막는 경향을 잉태한다. 민족 정체성을 혈통보다 정치적 실천에서 구하는 대조적인 사례로 본고에서는 뉴질랜드의 사례를 부각한다. 뉴질랜드는 동일성보다는 내부 종족 집단들 사이의 차이를 전제한 위에서 세속적이고 절차적인 방식으로 현안에 대응해 나가는 방향으로 민족의 정체성을 구성해 나가는 사례로 제시된다. 반면에 한민족 예외주의는 민족 내부의 동일성을 전제하고 시작함으로써, 공동체 내 부의 정치가 억압적인 방향으로 흘러가도록 유인한다. 이 때문에 한국에서 민족주의는 민족에 관한 서로 다른 해석들 사이에서 반목과 투쟁을 낳음으로써, 민족의 형성에 기여하기보다 오히려 방해하는 아이러니를 낳았다. 뉴질랜드의 사례를 모범으로 삼을 필요는 없지만, 내부적 차이에 세속적으로 대응하는 방향의 정치적 지향이 장차 한국 민족의 정체성을 확립하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper begins with an effort to establish that national identity is an instance of narrative identity. Narratives of national identity are bound to be exposed to criticism from in and outside of the nation. Thus, national identity is constructed by current political practices as well as memories of the past. Then, this paper goes on to criticize exceptionalism found in Korean nationalism. It represents an exclusivistic mindset to forestall criticisms from outside and triggers a tendency to brush off criticisms from inside. In contrast, New Zealand provides a case in which national identity is sought after not in terms of blood but through pragmatic and secular policies. National identity does not require homogeneity in any sense but practical politics reconciling different interests works towards building a nation. However, Korean exceptionalism, by presupposing sameness within the nation, tends to open an ample ground for repressive national politics. As a result, nationalism in Korea has often been a cause of antagonism and strife among different interpretations of what the Korean nation ought to be. New Zealand has had her own failures as much as successes in building a nation, but it is certain that a political orientation trying to cope with internal differences in secularistic and proceduralistic ways will help in Korea’s way to find its own national identity.
