국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 미국의 국민국가 건설과정에서 나타난 토지조사국의 역할과 그 노력을 살펴보고, 이들이 미국 역사에 끼친 순기능과 역기능을 확인하는 것이다. 토지조사국은 미국의 영토 확대를 가져왔던 가장 중요한 기구이자, 근대적 기술이라고 할 수 있는 제도기를 손에 쥐고 지금도 확인 가능한 미국만의 고유한 지리적 경계와 선을 만들어낸 인물이다. 토지조사국이 만들어낸 미국 국토의 기획은 예외적으로 반듯하게 정리된 지도를 우리에게 선물했다. 그러나 이런 순기능에서만 이들의 역할을 언급할 수는 없을 것이다. 이들은 근대적 좌표에서 국토를 기획함에 따라 전통적인 국토의 스토리를 이제 저만치 역사 속으로 사라지게 하였기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This article aims to enlarge the spheres and history of historiography of American System though orienting on much more ascending approaches in the grassroots than descending approaching such a political economists as Thomas Jefferson and Henry clay and Andrew Jackson. Even though these magnificent people are very important for the advanced national programs to furthermore stages of the development of American. All the ordinary people nevertheless are not to be forgot in the American system historiography. For example, they are the lower part of status in bureaucratic hierarchy. The General Land Officer above all exceptional actor to advance national development called American System. This officers went to the far western frontier to survey all the geographic peculiarities and environmental conditions. It was very dangerous missions. Sometimes they faced very combatant Indians and peril flora and fauna. All these not agreeable conditions. They checked and labeled all the geographic information and finally draw and dotted all these facts onto the rectangle paper maps. And their labour on the making maps are based on the earlier dangerous field survey and design by on the foot all the virgin territories. Finally because of their modern territorial designs, This new modern American style which was very unique in the visuals such rectangle district line on the maps could be find in the much more American western part maps than any other country. All these accomplishments were owed to their uninterrupted bravo spirits.
