국문 초록

본고는 문학 형식의 행위 유도가능성에 대한 사례 연구를 통해 관계적 차원으로서의 형식 개념을 고찰한다. 기존의 영미문학이론에서 형식은 텍스트의 내재적 속성이나 질적 구조를 가름하는 용어로 사용되어 왔다. 신비평을 비롯한 이십세기 형식주의 담론의 영역은 문학에 관한 사회문화적, 정치적 통찰과는 화해할 수 없는 이질적 거리를 유지해 온 것이 사실이다. 하지만 캐롤라인 레빈의 최근 연구는 텍스트와 독자의 상호관계를 통해서 문학 형식을 규정하면서 그 지평을 확장시켜 “형식주의 2.0”의 시대를 열어주었다는 데서 큰 의미가 있다. 특히 현대 디자인 이 론에서 차용한 “행위 유도가능성”의 개념은 그녀가 문학 형식을 새롭게 조명하는 문학 혹은 예술 형식에 대한 연구의 단초를 제공하는 핵심 용어로 의미가 크다. 본고는 관계성의 차원에서 문학의 형식을 규정하는 “행위유도가능성”의 개념이 존 밀턴의 「실락원」의 4장에 언급된 “방황하는 미로”(mazy error)라는 표현을 통해 방증되는 형식의 구체적 관계 원리를 해부해 가면서 레빈의 이론적 개념의 활용 가능성을 타진하고자 한다. 인간이 타락하기 이전의 흠 없는 에덴의 풍경을 묘사 하면서 시인은 “방황하는 미로”라는 공간적 개념을 사용하고 있다. 이것은 그 공간에 배치되어 살아가는 행위 주체인 이브와의 관계 속에서 그 구체적 의미가 구현되듯이, “방황하는 미로”와도 같은 시의 물적 혹은 공간적 구조와 마주하는 사용자로서 독자가 갖는 행위유도적 관계 즉 관계의 네트워크 형성을 통해 형식의 새로운 의미가 드러난다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper engages with some perennial, seemingly generic and outmoded questions that arise from Paradise Lost regarding the presence of “mazy error” in Eden and sin in the fallen world, and the intention of God thereon, in relation to the material and aesthetic dimensions of the work (distinct from the ethical and epistemic grounds on which these questions have traditionally been investigated by Milton scholars) and to the “affordances,” per Caroline Levine, of the epic genre and the dynamic alliance or connectivity between text and reader that the form thereby provides a space of interaction. As Levine’s notion of affordance has something to do with relations or network between two entities, a literary form latently affords physical relations, and its aesthetic scope resonates with relational tension rendered in the encounter between the reader and the text. Eve’s wandering journey through “mazy error” in particular insinuates the readers’ imaginative engagement with the physical system of the epic poem, molded like a maze, whether it is rendered on an ontological or epistemic level. The encounter between her mazelike body and the physical domain of “mazy error” formulates an interactive topography of ontic connections and a novel meaning of the literary form.
