신성철. 2018. 호주 한인 사회내의 계승어 자원에 대한 학부모의 태도 조사 연구. 국제한국어교육 4(2), 187-218. 계승어 학습자에 대한 선행 연구들은 부모의 태도가 자녀들의 계승어 습득 및 유지에 중대한 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여준다. 본 연구는 한인 사회에 있는 언어자원에 대한 한인 부모들의 태도와 인식, 그리고 한국어 계승어 유지를 위한 이들 자원의 유용성을 알아보는데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 한인 사회의 언어자원으로 사람, 장소 및 매체 등 세 가지 영역을 설정하고, 학동 자녀가 있고 호주 시민권자이거나 영주권자인 학부모 (대부분은 모) 43명이 참여한 설문조사를 통해 데이타를 수집하였다. 조사 참여자 들은 각 영역의 언어자원의 유용성 뿐만 아니라 자녀들의 계승어 능력과 한인정체성을 강화케 하는 한인사회 내 주요 장소와, 다언어 사회에서 자녀들이 한국어 계승어를 유지하는데 도움이 되는 가장 중요한 환경적 요인에 대한 질문이 주어졌다. 조사 분석 결과 가장 유용한 언어자원은 ‘사람’ 영역에서는 부모 자신 들, ‘장소’ 영역에서는 종교 시설, 그리고 ‘매체’ 영역에서는 한국의 ‘쇼’ 프로그램이 가장 유용한 언어자원이라는 견해를 보였다. 즉, 자녀들의 한국어 계승어 지식과 언어 기술 및 문화 정체성을 강화시키기 위해 한인사회 내에서 가장 영향력있는 사람과 장소는 부모 자신들과 교회 같은 종교시설을 꼽았다. 이같은 결과는 대부분 미국에서 이루어진 한인 계승어 학습자에 대한 선행 연구 결과를 대체로 뒷받침하고 한국어 계승어 유지에 대한 부모의 태도와 노력 (input)의 중요성을 다시 한번 조명하게 한다. 이는 또한 가정, 지역 한인사회 및 정규 학교가 함께 하는 협력과 지원이 필요함을 암시한다.본 연구는 연구 결과가 주는 함의로 몇몇 특이점과 가정 및 한인사회 내의 계승어 한국어 계발을 위한 가정언어계획 및 전략을 간략히 논의 한다. 또한 호주의 현 공공 언어교육 정책과 교육과정내에 계승어 한국어 과정을 주류화하는 하는 문제를 간략히 논의한다. Studies on heritage language learners have shown that parental attitudes towards their ethnic language are crucial in children’s acquisition and maintenance of the heritage language (e.g. Oh and Fuligni, 2010; Lu and Koda, 2011; Lee, B., 2012). This study investigates parents’ attitudes and perceptions towards the language resources available in the Korean community, with a particular focus on the usefulness of those resources for maintaining their Korean heritage language. The study has identified three main domains of resources in the community: people, venues and media. Data has been collected through surveys involving forty-three Korean parents (mostly mothers) who have school-aged children, and have been residing in Sydney as permanent residents or citizens of Australia. Respondents were asked about the usefulness of the resources in the domains, as well as a major community venue that helps children enhance their heritage language and Korean identity. Additionally they were asked about the most important ecological factor that helps their children to maintain their Korean heritage language in the multilingual society. The analysis has indicated that the most useful resources were parents themselves in the domain of ‘people’, religious venues in the domain of ‘venues’, and K-show in the domain of ‘media’. Participants indicated that the most influential people and venue in the community in order to enhance children’s knowledge and skills in the heritage language and their cultural identity were parents themselves and religious venues such as churches. The results generally support findings of previous studies on Korean heritage learners mostly conducted in the US, and highlight the importance of parents’ attitudes and input towards the Korean heritage language maintenance. The results also suggest that there needs joint efforts and support from home, community and schools. As implications of the results, the study briefly offers discussions on some peculiar points as well as family language policy and strategies to develop the heritage language in children at home and in the communities. It also offers a brief discussion on issues of mainstreaming the language into the public language policy and school curriculum in the current Australian educational climate.
