국문 초록

바이오제약산업은 R&D 투자의 증가와 새로운 혁신적인 기술개발에도 불구하고 생산성은 지속적 으로 감소하는 혁신 격차(innovation gap) 현상을 경험하고 있다. 많은 제약기업들이 오래 전부터 외부의 지식, 아이디어, 자원, 기술을 얻기 위한 노력을 경주해 왔지만 이러한 문제가 지속되고 있고, 기업들은 신약개발 모델을 보다 근본적으로 바꾸기 위해 R&D 프로세스 전반에 걸쳐 개방형 혁신을 적극적으로 도입하고 있다. 바이오제약산업에서의 개방형 혁신은 협력의 범위와 방식이라는 두 가지 측면에서 진화하고 있다. 우리나라는 선진국 제약기업에 비해 바이오제약기업의 규모도 작고 보유자 원도 절대적으로 부족하기 때문에 개방형 혁신을 통해 전체 생태계의 혁신체제의 효율성과 성과를 높일 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 선진국의 바이오제약산업 생태계의 사례를 중심으로 개방형 혁신의 현황 및 전망을 분석하여 국내 바이오제약 발전에 주는 시사점을 제시한다.

영문 초록

The biopharmaceutical industry, where research and development (R&D) efficiency is central to company survival, has faced innovation crisis. The cost for developing a new drug has significantly increased, as have total R&D expenditures. However, the output of new molecular entities has kept dropping. To increase efficiency, biopharmaceutical companies have started adopting open innovation models along the entire R&D processes. The open innovation paradigm are evolving in terms of scope and methods. With relatively small and limited resources compared to multinational companies in some developed countries, Korean biopharmaceutical companies need to understand the paradigm shift and increase efficiency and output of the entire biopharma ecosystem using open innovation. This paper analyses current status and perspectives of open innovation in biopharmaceutical industry ecosystem and offers implications for the development of biopharmaceutical industry ecosystem in Korea.
