이민 전ㆍ후의 연결망이 결혼이민자여성의 심리적 안녕감에 미치는 영향 - 우울도와 삶의 만족도를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 이민 전과 후에 형성된 한국 내 연결망이 결혼이민자여성의 심리적 안녕감에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하는 데 있다. 분석 자료는 경기도가족여성개발원이 2006년에 수집한 ‘경기도내 국제결혼이민자가족에 대한 조사: 외국인 부인 가족’이며 응답자는 경기도에 거주하는 총 810명의 결혼이민자여성이다. 심리적 안녕감은 우울도와 삶의 만족도로 측정하였으며 분석방법으로는 다변량 회귀분석이 사용되었다. 분석 결과는 본국출신 동료와의 연결망이 결혼이민자여성의 심리적 안녕감에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 보여준다. 이민 전에 한국 내에 존재하였던 본국 출신 동료와의 연결망은 우울도와 정적 관계를 가졌으며 이민 후 한국 내에 형성된 본국 출신 동료와의 연결망은 삶의 만족도와 부적 관계를 가지는 경향이 있었다. 또한 본국 출신 동료와의 연결망 효과를 이민 전후의 시점에 따라 구분하여 분석해 본 결과, 이민 전 혹은 이민 전후에 모두 본국 출신 동료이민자와의 연결망이 있다고 응답한 여성들이 연결망을 전혀 갖지 않은 여성에 비해 우울도가 높았다. 반면 이민 전후에 모두 본국 출신 동료와의 연결망이 있는 여성들은 동료와의 연결망이 전혀 없는 여성들에 비해 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 낮은 삶의 만족도를 가졌다. 본 연구는 본국 출신 동료이민자와의 연결망 혹은 연계(co-ethnic tie)가 결혼이민자여성의 심리적 안녕감에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것이라는 상식적인 예상을 벗어나 부정적인 영향을 미칠 가능성이 있다는 사실을 보여준다. 이러한 결과는 이민 후, 즉 조사시점의 연결망뿐 아니라 이민 전의 연결망효과에 대한 좀 더 깊이 있는 연구와 조사가 필요함을 함의한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine if and how family and co-ethnic networks before and after immigration are associated with the psychological well-being of marriage immigrant women in Korea. Data analyzed are from a survey in which 810 marriage immigrant women residing in Gyeonggi province participated. Depressive symptoms and life satisfaction are outcomes to capture the psychological well-being of the immigrant women. In the findings, immigrant women who had co-ethnic networks in Korea prior to immigration are likely to have greater depressive symptoms. Also, analyzing the effects of post-immigration networks, strong tie with spouse and family members are beneficial to psychological well-being. Co-ethnic networks after immigration, however, do not have a significant effect on depressive symptoms but have an adverse effect on life satisfaction at 10% level. Finally, the findings show that timing of co-ethnic networks matters. Immigrant women who have co-ethnic networks before arriving in Korea or at both time points (i.e., before and after immigration) are more likely to have depressive symptoms than those who do not have any co-ethnic networks before and after immigration. Also, immigrant women who have co-ethnic networks at both time points are likely to have lower level of life satisfaction than their counterparts. The findings of this study imply that co-ethnic networks/ties are not always beneficial to psychological well-being and suggest that further in-depth research on the relationships between co-ethnic networks and psychological well-being of immigrant women in Korea should be conducted.
